Bowling with plastic
« on: July 03, 2004, 12:30:27 AM »
If a person is averaging 180 with a plastic ball on a house shot, is it a real 180, since the bowler in question isn't using help-me-cheat-on-poorly-thrown-shots reactive equipment?

In my experience with throwing plastic on the THS I would have to say no because I find I actually have MORE area when I square up with the trusty old glow storm. I can throw messengers and trip out 4's just as often as when I use my reactives on most days. In my house there is only a slightly larger deposit of oil across the middle of lane so reactive/particle equipment won't hold on tugged shots, while plastic will.

Just my $.02

I have a much harder time throwing reactives, and have found that more often than not, a plastic ball will walk right into the pocket for me.  I know it sounds odd, but I think the carry is the real issue.  If you tug a reactive, sometimes it'll beak if it's a strong enough ball, but if it gets to the pocket, it'll still have some movement at the end and give you a better chance to carry.  If you tug plastic, it'll either slide too far and not come up enough, or hit very weak.  However, if you miss right, plastic holds better.  I've been throwing plastic a lot lefthanded, and have found that a nice easy shot results in a strike a lot more often than having to fight with reactives to get them down the lane.

In any case, I think if most people could average more with a plastic ball than with a resin ball, that would be saying something.  I still don't think 180 would be a real 180, but it'd be a lot closer to a real 180 than that same average with a resin ball would be.

To give you an idea just HOW easy a house shot can be...
A guy last night at monte carlo bowled backwards through his legs, throwing a back up house ball, and was able to hit the pocket (from the left side) more often than NOT!!!! He did this for one game. His carry wasn't great, and his spare shooting was terrible, but he could still hit the pocket.

IF you are lined up correctly for the shot, plastic on a house shot will still funnel into the pocket, just like reactives. The carry might not be fantastic unless you're using an xxxl, but the THS advantage is still there.

Sorry to disappoint you!

isn't as much of an issue as the THS, in my opinion. Some of the house shots, like the one I bowled on last night, can be "stupid easy", and there are still lots of folks throwing reactive and particle equipment and not carrying more than 140.
