HOW TO BOWL
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:21:42 PM »
I am currently averaging 224 in three leagues. I want to average 230+ but i am having a rather difficult time achieving this goal of mine. are there any tips from people out there who have gotten through this stage successfully who can give me some tips?

This is going to sound a little rude maybe (dont take it that way) but here are somethings that need to happen to get to that number:

1.  Strike more

2.  Stay out of trouble ie: splits

3.  Leave easy spares (and make all of them)

If you were to keep statisics for an entire year, i'm sure you & everyone gives away a ton of pins just from missing spares and leaving splits.

+1  An extra Strike and a couple of spares will make the 30 pins you are looking for in a set.

I am not in that average range but I would say to look at yourself and see where you are leaving pins. Maybe track your games for a month with a program that will show you the exact places that you are missing out on.

it doesnt. thats the honest true. on average i miss 1-3 spares a night. which your right that would help make the 230 average.

Just know that anybody can strike.. It's those who spare who score more :)

One thing you can do is ask the bowling center to print out your three game average game by game for the year.  I noticed after this season that my third game was considerably lower then the first two games on average.  I did average 234 last year, but its a ton of strikes to get there and very few missed spares.

Learning to read the lane transition will also help.  The pro bowlers are moving before they leave a split of have a low pin count.  What the pin carry and make a change before you leave that fast eight.

Another thing I like to do on my lanes (different depending on oil patterns and other variables ) is use a ball that doesn't roll out and isn't too skid flippy.  I like a ball with a strong continuation to help kick out the 10 pin on a half pocket shot.

Lessons.  Its amazing how much my game has improved since  I've taken lessons from bowling coaches at a high level.

Good luck.

the transition gets me i average 229 the first game and 234 the second but the last game is 209. it is a 5 man per team league but i have the hardest time adjusting that last game due to pushed oil. i leave tons of orner pins

Outside of the obvious which as already been mentioned:

1. Spares

2. Strike more

3. Read transition better

I would recommend you make a long of each lane you bowl on. I keep notes on every lane I bowl on that way I know what to expect starting out and as things break down. I have seen every possible variation of how one lane plays well enough to know from the beginning what is the best choice of attack. As well, I have enough information to have a plan B,C, and D should the original plan not work out.

Mr Perfect made a good recommendation, start using a log book but for the different lanes, different bowling balls, different bowling balls surface prep and line played.

If you are on a five man team, its probably not oil pushed as much as oil is gone by the third game and the ball doesn't have the energy to carry the 10 pin.  with 5-10 minutes of shadow, two full games of bowling with a 5 person team, the oil pushed the first game and probably the oil where a majority of bowlers is gone especially in the heads.  The ball probably rolled out or burned up in the third game contributing to leaving a lot of 10 pins.

I bowl with a teammate that averages about 213 and as long as the shot is down and in about the 8 board he scores fairly well.  As soon as he has to move left (right handed bowler) he doesn't have the skill to move in deep and his scores suffer.

Since you already average 224, you must have a solid game. But figure out why you are leaving so many 10 pins in the third game and you'll easily make up the 6 pins you are looking for.

I got a flip camera and started recording every shot I make during league, the good, the bad, the flatout ugly. This way I can go back and look through everything, see the feet differences, the hand motion, everything. My general "quirk," is that I like to try to put too much in the ball, or I take too much out. Basically overadjusting with the shot.

In other words, using a camera to watch yourself is a good idea.

If I'd done this sooner in the year I'd be averaging higher, seeing as I've been shooting 690+ since I did this.

If you bowl on a THS, maybe you should try to bowl in a Kegel Sport league. This will help improve accuracy and consistent shot making.

Also, go down to the ITC for professional on lane interaction.

Holding a 224 avg is great and it can be difficult to raise your game from there. There can be lots of variable that you may not be seeing that can help you get that extra 6 pins in your avg like ball surface, ball type, finger pitch, span, layouts. The ITC can help you with all of that.

i am 20 for 25 on my spares this week. two were 7-10. one ten pin and i pulled the shot. i missed the 3-6-9-10 leaving the 9 pin. and missed the bucket leavin the 5 pin. i really watched my hand positions. it appears as if my thumb is coming out a little to late and it causing my ball to have a little to much forward roll. i think that is y my ball seems to flatten out towards the end of the third game
