9-pin no tap tournaments????
« on: January 17, 2004, 07:33:24 AM »
I went to my bowling alley last night and didn't realize they had a 9-pin no tape tournament about ready to begin when i showed up. I left after the first game cause they only had six open play lanes and i wasn't getting on anytime soon.

I didn't talk to the guy behind the counter running the tournament to get the details.

Do these tournaments have a fee to enter?  I have never bowled in a tournament. Do you have to be in a league already to be able to enter the tournament? I noticed people buying raffle tickets like crazy, but couldn't figure out what they were for, any ideas?

During practice everybody was striking right off the bat, I guess these people bowl there regularly and have the lanes figured out even before they bowl. It looks pretty competitive, do I even stand a chance of doing well with a 172 average?

I figured I would do good cause I get a lot of 9-counts.

Does highest score determine the winner, or highest series? I noticed the computer would put a red X for a real strike and a black X for a nine count strike. Do they keep track of who had the highest score with real strikes and who has the highest score with a comibnation of real strikes and 9-pin strikes?

Wow, lotsa questions, but I'll take a crack at it...

9-Pin no-tap tournaments are usually pretty fun, and usually quite inexpensive.  There is a fee that covers lineage and prize fund, and I've been them for as low as $12 per person to as much as $35 per person.  Usually doubles, and usually mixed doubles.  They are almost always handicap, so yes you stand a chance of winning.

The raffles are usually for strike pot or other special pots they might have.  Women usually have their own jackpots as do the men.  Generally speaking, they don't keep track of your real strikes vs. your 9-pinners.

Good luck if you decide to try it out!

No-Taps are very popular in my area.  Around here, the typical series needed to move into the finals is usually 880 or better.  One bad throw or missed spare can basically ruin the rest of the event for you.  There have been several occasions where there were multiple 900 series bowled, requiring tie breakers to determine who moves on.  They are fun and not as easy as they seem.

We have 9pin hdcp tourneys here. Only one i bowled in i shot damn near 870 and missed cashing by 100pins. People warned me about bowling it and i still went ahead and did. 1015 won and 967 was last cash spot (3rdplace).

The no-taps at my local house are capped at 300 as the max score per game including handicap.  This is to encourage higher average bowlers to participate, knowing that no bowler can score higher than 300/900.

Our no-tap tournaments are done on a sport shot.  A 750 is a real good score.  No Handicap.  They are all walk-in entries.
