900, and I was there
« on: December 10, 2004, 12:14:38 AM »
I am still in shock and awe.  I don't know if the word has spread much yet, and I probably don't have much credit since I have only posted once before, but I witnessed a 900 last night.   Darin Pomije, owner of Strike Force Bowl in New Prague Minnesota threw 36 last night.

I agree - bet if a royal flush was dealt at the poker challenge it would be pinned up everywhere, on the radio, and all over TV  Good shooting!  I can't even get 12, let alone 36!

Hell, that is unreal. I wonder what the odds are of shooting a 900? I live in a fantasy world according to my wife, when I think about shooting a 900 I still leave solid tens.

SR: The value of a 900 (on any condition) is one thing we can agree on.

Last year, I witnessed one of the best bowlers in the Los Angeles area go 300-300, and then throw the first 3 strikes in the third game.

In the fourth frame, he left a 7-10 on a medium pocket hit, and then the game fell apart. He had to punch out in the 10th shoot over 200 and salvage an 800 series.

The point is that you need some breaks and nerves of steel to make a 900 happen, even on cake. My hat is off to Darin.

I can't remember what ball he was throwning exactly, I know it was a Track, and I guess he had only paid like $60 for it, and had just punched it out.  He had shot poorly with it the night before.   He was hitting around 14 or 15, and throwing it out to 9 or 10.

A 900 on any shot is a great feat. An 858 on a sport pattern in the ABC is another great feat (John Janawicz, 2004 ABC Tournament).

I hate to divert the direction of the topic, but which feat is more desirable? To break the singles record in the ABC Tournament in tough conditions, or shoot a 900 at home?

The ball he was throwing was a Hammer Deal.  He punched it out on monday, threw three games with it, and then used it thursday night in league.  If you go to the forum at mnbowling.com and check in the forum named "the lounge"  there are many posts on this topic.

When you go to bowl, remember.....Always bring extra purses, you never know when that pesky five pin is gonna dodge your ball.

Wow, out of the 7 900s shot Hammer now has 2 of them.  I guess they can claim more 900s have been shot with hammer than any other ball.  I know Jeremy Sonnenfeld shot his with a Pearl Pulse, Tony R. with a Teal Rhino, Vince Wood with a Firepower, Robby Portalatin with an AMF Hawk, James Hylton with a Track Black Stomp, and Jeff Campbell with a Blade Pearl.

I just got a Deal and I'm going to order another...I'd be happy for anything close to a 9 right now.

Jeremy Vitug,

To answer your question above, shooting 900 is almost impossible regardless where its at, period!! I personally believe BOTH are almost impossible to do because of the break factor.. You have to have alot of skill and a whole bunch of luck as well.. There have been times where I have hit the pocket 36 times and don't shoot 700. Thats what makes the 900 so hard to believe and much more of an accomplishment in my eyes..

Also, how do you know the 858 shot at nationals was a sport shot?

If they only made a ball that would carry that da_n 7 pin (and I am right handed!!)

Definitely NOT a sports condition shot, I'd imagine. But a great feat non the less.

Keep looking... I'm sure there's a 300 in one of those balls you keep buying!!

why is it that someone always has to belittle someone else's achievement???

congrats to the man!!

regardless of what it was bowled on, you still have to put it there!!!

The ABC shot is NOT EVEN close to a sport shot.  I've seen the charts and the numbers for the shot.  Sport shot at ABC?  HaHa.

jaco0268 - did you get to see most of his shots?  In no way am I trying to belittle his accomplishment, 900 is huge, but I'm wondering roughly how many breaks he caught.  You figure, he had to catch a couple.  It's unusual to even see a 300 without a couple of breaks.

Nice job, Darin Pomije.

As for the 900 versus the 858 at nationals ... I'd take the 858 at nationals by a very slim margin for two reaons.  1) it breaks a record 2) more money!

I'd take the 900 on Angel food cake.

Set down my ball, take it home, step out of my shoes, offer the rest of the balls for sale, walk out of the center with the ball, put it on a shelf with the local article about myself.  Stop by the center once in a while to pontificate.  Never throw another shot again.

Find another sport to dominate.  Maybe go back to golf and see how many sub 60s I could shoot(No not tour level courses)!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS is he lefty or righty?  Cranker or stroker, high speed or low speed.  Drilling?  Oily or dryer?  Length of pattern?  Anything known?
PPS There will probably never be a 900 shot on a sport condition.  If so maybe 1 in the next 100 years!
