Post by: Phoneman on March 19, 2014, 01:06:39 PM

I remember 30 years ago when people went bonkers over Pat Landry's 886.

Now, we've got what 23-24 900's (-2 if you ignore the phantom Mushtare ones).

*old school sigh*

Better oil?  Better equipment?  maybe.  starting with better coaching? video coaching? i think those have a play in there too, which i don't see many people give credit to.  Any 300, or 800, or 900 etc. should be thought of as a feat.  still takes a person capable of repeating shots to get there.

We know more about the game, we have better equipment, and more consistent machines dressing the lanes.

It's not surprising, or even sad.

Years ago race cars were slower, golfers couldn't hit as far, wide receivers couldn't run as fast or jump as high.

It's still a competition between bowlers, and the score will always be irrelevant. Obviously, the 900 means he was the best bowler on the lanes that night....but until we're seeing everyone bowl 900, there's still a margin to win and lose.

That's why we keep score, not for rings and magnets.

Knowledge, schmoledge.

I will agree that overall bowlers are better, but you've still got guys 200 rev rates throwing scouts.

WRW is GOAT or GOAT 1a depending on who you talk to, but watch vids from 1988 vs. 1994.  When technology helped him pop the corners, he went from really good to heads above the field.

+1

We have oilers that can strip every drop of oil off the lane before applying the oil, 30 years ago no one went to a bowling convention to talk science of bowling but they do now.

Times change and bowling does also.
