Oval vs Lift style grips
« on: July 11, 2007, 02:46:37 AM »
Has anyone tried switching from Lift grips to ovals?

I'm thinking about making the switch.  I turned a set of vise grips around last night in one of my balls just messing around, and the ovals actually felt more comfortable.  They just seem to form to the finger better, more contact with the grip instead of just at the front.  Is there a pitch change between the two styles?  It seems like there is, but I'm not positive.

Anyway, just looking for some opinions here, and horror/happy stories if you have any.

Lifts generally add 1/4" forward pitch to the fingers.

Don't hold me to this, but I believe the pitch change is around 1/8 (towards grip center) - at least that is what my finger holes are set for, and I use the lifts.

I'm rev challenged, so I need the lifts.  I've used regular non-lift grips in a couple of balls (mostly my spare ball) and do notice a difference.

Stumbled across this article.  I guess the pitches are going to be different for everybody, depending on you finger flexibility.

What I like most about VISE INSERTS is the feel - not to soft and not to hard. The POWER insert is flat on the bottom and has an automatic 1/4 forward pitch. The OVAL insert have an automatic 0 pitch. Lets assume your pro decided you could only bend 1/2 way to 0 pitch. Surface plug your old ball or when you drill a new one pitch the fingers 1/2 reverse if your using oval inserts, and 3/4 reverse if you are using power inserts. If you do not do this you will be lifting the ball with the joint of your finger not the pad of your fingers. As time goes by your joint will be come irratated and will not get the maximum power from having the full pad of your fingers griping the inserts.

Go with the ones that feel best to you.  Everyone's different.

I've switched from Lifts to Oval. The ovals gave me more control on the number of revolutions I put on the ball.  The ovals seems more comfortable.  I'm not going back to lifts again.

I concur at least with my spare ball. I roll it much truer especially on seven pins.
