A ball recommendation please
« on: February 16, 2015, 04:57:09 PM »
My wife went to the local pro shop and got me a new ball for Valentines Day. It's a DV8 Thug Unruly.
She wanted to surprise me and I was, pleasantly! . The only thing is I have some heavy oil, strong rolling balls, but I hardly ever use them.  Not enough oil and I do much better with "weaker"  balls.  My favorites are the Lights Out and Yeti Uncaged. I mainly use the LO.
I'm going to take the Thug Unruly back for an exchange so I'm looking at balls that I can actually use.
I'm leaning towards the Rhino Pro or a Grease Monkey Whack, but open to any other options.  Not company specific, that's why I didn't post in any particular company forum.

perfect everyday ball would be the rhino pro vintage or a dv8 hooligan. also the diva divine is a fantastic ball. i have all three and the unruly and they are all super good balls but the rhino pro vintage and the diva divine would be the best for house shots

The Melee Cross, Melee Jab, or the new gold Rhino Pro are excellent choices.  I placed the balls in order of soonest hooking to latest hooking.  I am really looking forward to the new Rhino Pro as it has great length and a strong response off of the dry boards.  The Melee Jab may be a little better shiner type benchmark ball as it reads the lane sooner.

I have a Yeti Uncaged, do you think that the Vintage Rhino Pro would overlap?  Is the motion similar or would the VRP be a bit stronger...if drilled similar of course.

I don't see many people post about it but I think hammer's absolut flip is a very good house shot piece. I bought one on a whim and I'm liking everything it has done for me. I roll mid 16s and can get up to 17, med revs and I would say i'm more of a tweener.

There would possibly be some overlap, although I suspect the new Rhino to be a little weaker with more length.   I would go with the Melee Cross as a step up for sure.

i love my lights out as well. i use an uproar when not using lights out. it is great when the lanes transition and need more backend. both are driled pin down for me and work great together. lights out is scuffed and being hybrid moves earlier uproar box finish goes longer and finishes harder.

I would suggest and Outcry, really nice smooth arc, reads the midlane pretty good and it wont over react in the backend

2 very good THS balls would be the Motiv Venom Shock and the Sigma Sting (on closeout).  The Venom Shock is stronger than advertised and it will handle a variety of medium and medium-light patterns.  It has a smooth motion overall and it's one of the better balls available currently.

The Sigma Sting is what I consider a great benchmark ball.  Being a little stronger than the Shock, it is very clean through the front and gives more length than the Shock.  But, it's not skid/snap.  Instead, it provides a very predictable reaction and can be used on some heavier patterns.

Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions!  I want something below the Uncaged, which is plenty strong for me. I actually was going to get the Outcry, but decided wait.

Maybe save the Thug Unruly and wait to have it drilled. You may find a situation in the future that you may be able to use it?

I think I'd just use the Thug Unruly to keep my wife happy!  If you exchange it she may never try to buy you an awesome gift like that again.  Then try trade or sell whatever it replaced.

Lol, I have a few heavy balls that are ready and waiting since they are hardly used. So the Thug Unruly would join those balls in the waiting room. My wife just wanted to get me something, and she knows nothing about bowling too. She said the pro shop operator was asking her a bunch of questions, but she had no clue, so he suggested that and she bought it.
She doesn't mind me exchanging in it, and actually encouraged it.  I'd rather get something that I could use as a daily driver.

What kind of ball motion do you want?  Something cleaner and angular or something that is weaker than the Uncaged but still smooth and controllable?
