A false positive ...
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:43:49 PM »
Umm...no worries.  Not an expecting father ???

Tonight during league, I threw my first warm up shot up 1st arrow (with a Sanded Train) and surprisingly the ball just kept going... and finished really strong.  I say surprisingly as the house is generally on the dry side...  second shot on the other lane, I  hit the same line with a little more on it...  same result.  I threw one across the middle if the lane....then shot at a 10 pin.  Last shot, I move in a few and play up 2nd arrow.  This time, the ball over reacts WAY early and crosses over.  Now I'm left with the question, do I move back out use and try to play there for a few more shots until what oil may be out there disappears...or just jump inside?

Well..  I decided to take the opportunity to play outside.  Flush the first shot and stoned an 8 pin.  On the next shot, I came around the ball a bit too much and instead of a strong roll, got a flip on the backend and left a big split.  Next shot the ball hooks early, hits flat and 10 pin.  I move 8 with my feet and 5 with my target left, and the ball jumps early.  Another 4/2 left and dead flush...  string a few together, then start the back row progression..  8 pin, next frame 7 pin, then finish the game with a 10 pin.  A pretty awful opening game on a relatively easy house shot.

Decide to listen to everything that I read.... leaving the back row indicates that I'm throwing the wrong ball in the wrong part of the lane.   Switch to my newly acquired Jet Pilot and move back right on the approach and tighten up my line.  Generally a pretty good reaction..left a couple weak 7 pins, missed one  :'(, and dealt with some transition..but shot 230.  Last game I move a bit more inside, swinging the ball a bit...front 3, absolutely stone an 8 pin, next 5, then threw a pretty poor shot in the 10th to leave a 4 pin...shoot 258 game.

Happy with shooting a 670 set...but still scratching my head about the "false positive" outside line that seemed to be there at the start of the night.

Ever see something early on that turned out not to actually be there?

Yes.

Sometimes it's because at first I'm not loose, and thus, not up to speed.  Then as I get my "normal" speed the shot that carried before is not carrying anymore.

Other times it's that the oil pattern transitions just enough that the bowler needs to change something in order to carry.  Hard to know for sure, but never be afraid to try something different (anything) in case it works, and then you're a genius; or wonder the rest of the night about what might have been...
