A little BR ball suggestion help for my friend?
« on: September 10, 2008, 08:25:09 AM »
All,

My teammate and friend is in dyer need of some assistance.  At this time she is throwing a Track Mean Machine.  The biggest issue is her lack of 10 pin carry.  I know that is an issue for most everyone, but I have never seen anyone leave as many 10 pins as her.  She is very accurate and quite a decent bowler, current league average 170.  I do not know her specs and I'm quite sure she has not clue either.  Her speed is in the 10-12mph range, with some hand, around the 10 board with good angle of entry.  House shot with a good amount of oil in the middle, on synthetics. She has tried speed, hand and stance adjustments but nothing seems to help.  It seems she is getting good pin action but pins are flying high not low.  Could it be the ball?  Is there a ball out there that might help her knock down a few more 10's?  I've already suggested lessons and that didn't go over to well.  Thanks to all for any assistance.

What's the surface on the ball?  The Mean Machine is a pretty strong ball, especially for someone throwing 10-12 MPH.  If it's kind of dull, consider changing it to 2000 or 4000 grit abralon or 600 grit with a little polish.  Also, if she's been using it for a while, maybe it's oil logged.  When was the last time it was soaked/baked/rejuvenated?

What ball weight is she using and could she handle a heavier ball?  --  JohnP

Thanks!!!

Good points/ideas.

Strider - I know she cleans on a regular basis and has soaked/baked the ball on an as needed basis, once just recently.  The cover is still in great shape and dull.  I'll run one of my Abralon pads over it tomorrow night with a little polish and see how that works.

John - Sorry, I forgot to put that in the post, 14lb.  I don't think she could handle a heavier ball.  She is little as it is.  In fact, the pro-shop tried to talk her into going 13 so she could gain a little speed.  Her spare ball is 13lb, which has been a great investment since she leaves so many 10's!!

Thank you both for your replies and ideas.

My wife has a similar game and at 4'11" and 110 pounds a heavier ball in not really an option. When she starts leaving 10 pins with her Absolute Inferno at a duller suface I usually have her go to a shinier piece a staighten the line a little. She usually goes to a shiny Inferno or a Rico'd Scout/R. Inferno gives her more pop and the Scout gets into a good roll. It just depends on the lanes. I usually can tell by the way my shot is reacting. Of course I have the advantage of bowling with her for the last 19 years.

I agree with those who suggest a little shine on the ball.

luvtobowl2 - you sound like a good friend and teammate, but it sounds like she is looking for a silver bullet, which doesn't exist. Someone here can make the perfect equipment suggestion and it will work for her until the conditions change, or you bowl on an end pair, or she has a bad night.

There are many adjustments that can be made which are not equipment related. Sure, they must be combined with a good choice of equipment, but to quote from Robert Smith: "If you're not willing to change, you're not willing to improve".

I wish you luck, but your best advice was to suggest coaching which didn't go over well.  Give a woman a fish, feed her for a day.  Teach a woman to fish, feed her for a lifetime.  Sounds like she just wants the day thing.  Keep being a good friend, but don't be surprised if any suggestion you make that works for a little while come back to bite you in the future.

Everyone,

Thanks for your responses and assistance.  I'll pass along these suggestions and continue to help her as much as I can.

J.J. - Are you sure you don't know this person?  Either that or your psychic!!

Thanks again!!

hahaha that sounded like what i faced pretty much this week, i was leaving 10 and 7s like no tmr even changing balls, hand, move, nothing could take away the 10 except the spare ball LOL

yesterday night, i bowled against a guy who had no clue throwin a total inferno, but he carried everything, light, high, brooklyn. having someone throwing a 4 bagga brooklyn is really demoralizing while i hit my own line and leave ringing 10s

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.
