No offense, but if you normally miss 2 spares a game on a normal shot, you have no business in a scratch tournament. Consider it a blessing you missed this one. If you can find some cheaper ones to enter, do so as a learning experience.
Also, you don't use a plastic ball to take the oil out of play. If you have enough time/frames, you can throw it near the middle and develop some hold. You can take a dull particle ala Dave Traber and try to make a dry area to create a dry spot downlane for a breakpoint. With 10 minutes of practice, you would be better served by trying to find the best line that has a chance of holding up for most of a game. Tournament conditions tend to change drastically.
Again, please take no offense at this, but if you average 177 (profile) on a house shot (assumption since you average lower in a mixed league), why did you expect to average 200 on a flat shot? Most people (myself included) average 10-20 pins
less than on their normal league shot. The reason being you don't string strikes on a tougher pattern, you leave a lot of spares you normally don't see, and shooting spares can be adventure if you are not used to throwing plastic
straight at spares.
