A new ball for the fall
« on: May 28, 2008, 02:15:09 AM »
Im in a summer equipment league....I need some feedback on ball choices for the fall league. I like of course the Cell, Complete NV, and the Ogre series.

I  want something with an aggressive coverstock.

BR Members....I need some help on this one

There's a world of difference in reaction between the Cell and the Complete NV.  Do you want strong, smooth, consistent ball motion, or do you want an angular breakpoint with a ton of backend?  There is more to it than just "aggressive coverstock."  Also, what is your game like?  Slower speed, higher speed?  More revs, less revs?  Lots of forward roll or a lot of tilt?  What kind of lane conditions do you generally face?  What is your comfort zone, do you like to throw the big hook or want a little more control?

All that being said, I finally punched up a Cell 9 days ago and could not be happier.  It is probably the best bowling ball I have ever thrown, and that's not just being excited about a new ball.  The most versatile ball I've ever thrown, I've used it on oil, dry, and everything in-between, and it just refuses to roll out and die in front of the pins, and is always smooth and controllable when it transitions from oil to dry.  Pin carry is phenomenal.

I love how some people put a ball they have had success with without any sort of reasoning or theory and then say the discussion has ended.

The real thing at issue is what you want the ball to do. Ok, you want an aggressive coverstock. But why? Do you want it to be an earlier rolling ball? a more skid/snap agressive? There are tons of balls with an aggressive coverstock these days, so to give a honest good suggestion, we might need some more information.

Prince...I have heard so much about this ball, just like any other new ball that comes out. I guess it`s not all just hype then.

Dan...Ive got med revs, high ball speed. I know that i can have any ball drilled to roll early or skid snap. I want it to roll  hard, and read early. I have a ton of skid snap stuff. Cell could be it, but i would love to hear more opinions....thanks

Mad....the reason i want a aggressive coverstock is because, Im a high speed bowler. I lot of times...( by habit ) I will roll past the breakpoint. I need something to matchup with my game, my power better.....Especially when the conditions become a little squirrly.

Check out the Code from AMF.  It has a hybrid (half solid, half pearl) coverstock.  Excellent midlane read and nice backend.  First ball out of the bag right now.

For what it's worth, "I know that i can have any ball drilled to roll early or skid snap" is true only to a degree.  You can drill more length and more angularity into any ball, and you can drill earlier roll and smoother reaction into any ball, but all bowling balls have their own natural tendancies that you can only alter to some degree.  A Cell is never going to show you the same kind of violent skid/snap reaction that you would get out of a Complete NV that you drill and surface the same, for example.

So, it sounds like your game is a little speed dominant.  I likewise am speed dominant, but that doesn't mean necessarily what works for you would work for me.  But for example, what works for me generally tends to be strong balls drilled a little weaker with some surface.  For reference, my Cell has a pin to PAP distance of around 5 3/4", with the pin ending up underneath my middle finger, with the mass bias in the strong position.  I left it at the box finish, 2000 abralon.  This gets me through the heads cleanly, but lets the ball really pick up in the midlane and just keep turning left when it hits the backend.  However, this is not necessarily an ideal layout for heavier oil, for example.  For me the key is to keep the ball from hooking too early so that I still have some backend punch left, but to also use the midlane to generate a good read so I don't have to rely on the backend as much.

Basically, what you're looking for is something strong with some (not too much) surface, so probably you'll want to avoid pearl equipment in general, though you CAN knock the polish off a pearl ball and get a very strong reaction.  It still tends to not be as early as a solid or particle or even particle pearl would be.  Cell, LevRG, Resurgence, and coming out next month the Storm Dimension are just some of the possible candidates in my opinion.  However, just be sure to not put too strong of a drilling to help prevent the ball rolling too hard and burning up before it gets to the pindeck.

Someone else also mentioned the Code, that may be a good option as well.  The hybrid solid/pearl cover will give you earlier read than a normal pearl.

Consider something different, try a Lanemaster ball.  Very high quality and last longer than any other ball.  Link to their website is below, select the ball that fits your game best.  --  JohnP

Dan...good analysis. You`re right, I want some thing aggressive with not too much surface. I am aware that certain strong coverstocks can burn up on the backend. The Code could be something im interested in as well...Hell, I may get both of them, drilled differently.

The layout you spoke of....I have the same layout on an old Ebonite Trimax Vortex I. Best ball I ever owned. I`ve tried several times with several balls to duplicate that drilling.....with no success.

Keep it coming guys

Again, visit the website and look/listen to the information about all the balls.  For what you want, I would say the Bigger Bang.  --  JohnP

I have the Cell and though its a great ball, I just replaced the Cell, at least temporarily, with the Mighty Shift. I also have the Complete NV and the Ogre solid and I prefer the Mighty Shift for med/heavy over all of them including the Buzzbomb, though I have come to use the Buzzbomb more and more as a strong control ball on medium conditions.

You being a Texas boy,  try out the new Break S-75 from 900 Global.
New meaning to the word hook and backend.  Due out in June or July.

I know I am loving the Gladiator Solid....and I will say that the ball compares very well thus far with the Cell, except for more backend!!
