It never fails with me.  Ever since I was about 16, I've had the problem of bowling like crap the front half of the season, and usually a week or two before or after the start of the second half I kick it into gear.
I noticed it when I was 16, I started bowling youth league at a different house (old house was no longer YABA, etc).  I missed 2 weeks at the beginning, but at the new year (we bowled september-april/may) my average was 180.  By the end of league my average was 199.  I somehow managed to bring my average up 19 pins in half a season.

I'm 22 now, last year the same thing happened.  I started the second half at 191, ended at 202.  I'm not sure what the problem is.

That being said, I'm really thinking of transitioning to a 15 pound ball.  Perhaps I don't pick up any REAL consistency until I get used to throwing the ball which takes 16 weeks?  But that sounds ridiculous.  But it's happened to me for 5 or 6 years now.

any ideas?

I usually have the same problem.  For me I believe it has to do with the weather.  I always get hot while bowling until winter is here. When they turn the heat on you have less humidity and they usually keep it cooler in the center.  Also I have less trouble with my thumb swelling and shrinking in the winter

So long as you're not throwing off to start with that 190 average, that's a pretty ideal situation to be in if you're bowling in a handicap league.  Handicap leagues reward people who improve steadily because outside the first few weeks, it takes a while for your handicap to catch up to your current average.

P.S. Knee-jerkers: Don't interpret that as a condoning of sandbagging.  They're scum, cheaters, and losers (figuratively if not actually).

Could it be that by mid-season you've adjusted to the pattern being layed down.

rant on/I wish it was cooler in my center... the last 3 high school matches the heater was set on 80 everyone was complaining but they wouldn't turn it down... My team told our  coach if it was like that tomorrow we wasn't gonna bowl and he said he would talk to them...so its all good, i hope...

One of the lane guys said it was the owner who gets cold sitting in his office(around 75/80 years old) and he comes out and turns it up /rant off

i was joking and told the lane guy to buy him a space heater for his office for christmas... i hope he did

sorry for the hijack

See, now im the opposite. Start off with a high average and end up always falling off 10-15 under my normal average by the end of the season.
