a non-scientific test/survey
« on: January 26, 2005, 03:52:50 AM »
Please reply that you either know or do not know what is meant by the term "flat-spot" as it applies to bowling.

I'm trying to test out a notion I have.  No grades will be given, nor any commentary.

the only reference to "flat spot" that I can think of in bowling is a ball that comes from the manufacture that has a flat spot on it, as in not being round.

Rags, without trying to sound silly, I am not certain this has any one meaning.  I tend to use "flat spot" to describe that point in the armswing where the ball can be released without a marked upward or downward motion.  The larger the "flat" area at the bottom of the swing the greater the margin for timing error.  Flat spot is also used to describe a part of a core that is flat relative to an otherwise rounded or circular shape.  Flat spot colloquially means a spot worn flat on the surface of the ball.

The "flat spot" is at the bottom of your arm swing and is the best point of release to achieve maximum control/power of the ball.

It also the side of the ball that is out of round.

The flat spot could be where you release the ball in the swing.
The lowest point where it runs flat to the lane surface.
Sound right?
DUH should have read the replies youve all got it before me.
