Which pearl would handle carrydown the best? - Code Black, United Revolt or other?
And what type of layout would be best? - A layout that has a short hook-to-roll phase?
-
Haven't seen or thrown the United Revolt, but the Code Black looks good.
Personally, I use a Motiv Paranoia for this.
-
Saw the United Revolt in action last night. It was pretty strong off the spot for the bowler (high rev and speed - think EJ Tacket). The bowler had a little too much friction for the United Revolt and the ball was a tad unpredictable. Moved to a Jackal Ghost and was able to control the break point well.
Also, one of my bowlers was using a Code Black with decent success. Started with the Phaze but it was burning up a tad because of the required launch angle. Moved to the Code Black and was able to get a better reaction at the breakpoint.
Of the two, the Code Black seems to start up a bit sooner and be more rounded. If you are looking for something to react stronger at the spot, then I would say the United Revolt. Depending on how you approach carry down either could work. If you like to bang it off the dry and force the reaction, then the United Revolt looks good. If you like to start the ball early and make sure it reacts some, then the Code Black would be the ball I think.
But man, that United Revolt looks pretty strong and is pretty similar to the Code Black. Last night's assessment could be because of the differences in bowler styles and the newness of the United Revolt.

The Scandal Pearl, Phobia, GB2 Phenom Pearl, & Tyrant Pearl are a few that can handle carrydown well from what I have been using / seen. The Code Black is a good ball, but from what I have seen from some bowlers in my area, tends to be a little to clean and angular down the lane.... There are a lot of great products out there from a lot of various companies, but I can personally vouch for the balls that I mentioned above that are in my arsenals...

Seismic Venator Evolution handles oil and carry down well for a pearl.
-
My Evolution and Hybrid didnt do anything in oil for me. Worked well on mediums to med-dry for me.
-
Best ball ive thrown for oil has been the Paradox. Its a hybrid but great for me on the heavier stuff.
-
Inception Pearl as well. Late mid read with a good move off the spot.
-
Albeit a lower end pearl with mid-level performance, the freakshow cuts right through carry down for me like it's not even there, one of the best low-end pearls you'll find on the market (along with the Wreck-em).
-
I agree I own code black and it is clean and sometimes sensitive to over under, there are a lot of good balls out I normally can play my primal fear or sr2 or sometimes Ball down to my low end stuff like a tag or cobra venom
-
I have good luck with the respect hybrid. Punching a pearl soon.
The ball makes a good midlane move and keeps me in play through carry down. Gotta have some speed or head oil for it.
-
Bowled an even oil tournament 42' oiled on top of the previous night's league shot. The owner even was squirting oil onto the lanes out of a ketchup bottle...Just to create more out of bounds.
Talk about no hook and tons of carry down lol.
Guess what ball made me $350 and 2nd place.
900 global equipment, took my winnings and recently invested in a nib respect pearl and another nib dream.
So sad the line is gone.

The Snap Lock would be a better option over the Code Black on carrydown. The Snap reads the mids a little better and isn't as jerky at the breakpoint for better control.

Odds are unless you are on the same pair as people throwing plastic or urethane this is what you are experiencing.
-
Most asymetric pearls are good on carrydown. Really deoends on your style, and how long the pattern is. The longer the pattern the less carrydown is an issue.

Very good read. So let me ask this. Say I start with a symmetric solid. At the end of game 2 it's become too lazy on the backend and I decide to move left and play that bumper. What's considered the better move as I see the article says ball up with more backend. Ball up to say a Code Black or ball up to say a Wreck-em as it stores more for the backend.
-
I've got to say that my Quantum Fire had no problems with carrydown this past week at either house I bowled at. One league I started with the Siege Defender, and the other I started with the Quantum Forest. I will say, however, that following the Siege I was able to stay relatively in the same spot after switching, but I had to jump deeper inside after following the Quantum Forest (cause it eats up the fronts more).
just my $0.02

No one here can answer that......depends on what ball you start with, ball surfaces, what you are bowling on, etc. Usually on a THS the first couple of moves I don't change balls just move in to get back into some oil or just get angle through the fronts to create some hold. If that goes away I ball up and move deeper. If I still have trouble I will shell down to get more skid through the fronts.
-
I agree we all bowl in different houses lanes are different oil patterns are not the same I usually can throw my primal fear all night when starts tapping usually move in or ball up to my jackal ghost and if that to much I'll ball down to my sr2 or cobra venom I had a code black for me it's too clean and was sometimes sensitive it would either skid to far and tap or see dry and take off not that it's a bad ball just didn't match up for me as well

True carry down needs some surface...particle tends to work well. My old Bruns Navy Fuze-particle high Rg pin above worked well on true carry down. The other one, I would suggest is a Visionary Raven pearl particle mid Rg. https://www.visionarybowling.com/ball/raven
"The coverstock on the Raven is a reactive pearl formulation, with a light load of the same particle used in the Ogre Particle. This cover allows the ball to give you the backend reaction of a scuffed pearl, while preventing the ball from skidding through the breakpoint when you run into mild carrydown or a transitioning pattern"
Look back at EJ Tackett's ball response in the TOC using a pearl Octane Carbon it was iffy at best on the right lane. This is why pearl balls tend not to work well on true carry down.
-
But have remember a lot of companies now are using additives in their cover stock pearl and solid to give it extra traction so still all depends on what you are using and what works best on what you are bowling on

Would a sanded pearl then work just as well as a particle pearl?
-
Yes I have a sanded Brainiac that works wonders
-
Maverick Pearl handles just what you describe, we had carrydown this past week in league and went to this stronger piece with good success.
Also, Scandal Pearl, Tyrant Pearl are also in the same category

Thanks for some reality. When reading this thread I was thinking about my practice session late Friday afternoon. Most of the day, between seniors and kids, plastic and urethane were almost exclusively in use. A true carry down nightmare. The only ball that gave me any reaction was my new DV8 Pitbull, which is one of the strongest balls on the market.
A stronger Pearl will combat minor carry down to some degree, if you can find some friction to work with. But it's definitely not the answer for the more extreme cases.

Agreed. It's more the definition of carry down and how bowlers define carry down.. I noted true carry down and if that is the case....pearl balls without surface just are not going to read the lane correctly. Surface is the key....particle will help also.

not 100% true anymore with these new covers
I only know the EBI brands, but I'm sure other brands are doing a similar thing
Some of these pearls read much earlier than the traditional pearls we think of
The Maverick and Tyrant Pearl read the mids much sooner than in the past ball choices
I was at a EBI proshop seminar last spring, the talk then was focusing on the hook phase of ball motion.
The speaker had mentioned that cover technology had only begun to be explored in the industry
Along with the certain weighting areas of the core and stronger pearl covers, the ball can read at different points of the hook phase
Traditional carry down implies the same amount of oil left in the heads, which I agree would make me go to something stronger, and probably some surface
But, today's game doesn't seem to have that scenario as much anymore, this strong equipment removes the oil from the heads and mids, making it look like carry down.
That's where the stronger pearls come into play for me (when I throw it properly)
Just my $.02 worth

I agree with Dave, we'll said.
