Need help picking up spares,
« on: January 09, 2004, 02:56:12 AM »
The last two times i went bowling i have been trying to throw straight at my single pin spares, or 2 pin spares like 4-7, and 6-10, etc.

No matter what i do my ball starts to tail off at the end and go left. Its really frustrating me.

Is it time to buy a plastic ball for spares, maybe?

Usually i throw a hook to pick up spares and it works great, now when its time to pick up a spare i am not sure if I am going to be successful.

This is how i learned to shoot single pin spares (some of the tips can be used for some multi-pin spares). First, get a plastic ball. A cheap white dot or Maxim will do.

Also, make sure this spare ball feels good. This ball can sometimes be the most neglected ball in your bag!

If you are right handed, and lets say you are shooting spares on the left side of the deck, stand all the way right on the approach. Then... (lets say from the 7-pin), you draw a straight line from the 7-pin down to the foul line and up to where you are standing. You then align your shoulder to this invisible line you have made, and then just throw it like a normal ball. You will normally be looking at the area between the dots and arrows in the head as you are in your approach.

The same goes for the spares on the right side, like the 10 pin, just that you are going to stand on the left side of the approach. You do the same exact thing. Get ready to throw the ball, but before you do, you visualize a straight line coming from the 10-pin through the lane, and to where you are standing. You then adjust how your shoulders are pointing and then throw it on the line you have created. Again, you'd be looking at the area between the arrows and dots while you are on your approach.

It takes some practice to get used to, but in the longrun, its a good investment because it takes the lane out of play- preventing hang and hook spots when shooting spares. HOpe it helps.

I am real close to hiring a coach soon too. The proshop I go to lists them for $40 bucks an hour. I want to get some pointers on what i am doing right and wrong.

A guy bowling in the lane next to me told me i have really good form. I guess i believe him, i mean i have never seen myself bowl before in video tape or anything.
