Change balls or adjust??
« on: November 06, 2006, 09:29:42 AM »
I am just wondering at what point do you go to a different ball? If you had a "favorite" ball, one you historically have been most comfortable with, but you had other balls that have higher and lesser hook potential, would you switch balls if the lanes were dictating that,  or would you make an adjustment on the lane, even if it was a radical one, such as moving many boards or change in speed etc., just in order to use your "favorite" ball?

I do both. Sometimes Both is a need. For example on a short pattern you can either play wide swing or up the near the gutter. Changing balls to fit may be necessary. Just adapt to whatever Lane condition your on.

I usually adjust 1st if the ball seems to react well but just isnt carrying the corner, but if ball doesn't seem to react well this I change 1st

I'm one of those players that prefers to move and adjust on the lane rather then switch balls.  Even though I have a very competant driller and all my equipment feels the same.  I like to pick a ball during shadow practise (and lets agree here that if you bowl in the same house week after week, year after year, you KNOW what ball to start out with) and stick with it.

I change balls when I use up about 2 to 3 frames of moving and there are no positive results.  Lets say you pick a ball and you go 6 frames with 4 being 10 pin leaves (right handed).  You have been adjusting for the 10 pin but it hasn't worked.....time to jump to another ball.  You've almost wasted 6 frames but since you have picked up your 10 pins all is not lost.

If you stick with the ball and get to the 10th frame (you covered your 9th with a strike or spare) then you can get your first mark in the 10th and pick another ball and throw a test shot.

At all costs, you mark in the 9th and 10th, then try another ball on yoru bonus ball.  If you are not in a good position to do this, then you should have switched balls earlier.

I try and stick to 1 ball untill the fill shot making ajustments as needed, then I get an Idea of what another might do for the fill, and judge from there. If I have an absolutely horrible look in the 3rd frame and I cant ajust out of it then I usually switch from there aswell, basicaly if it seems like everything I do dosent work, Ill flip balls.

One of my teammates is famous for changing balls. He lease 3 at the bowling center and then brings in at least 4 more on league night. He sits on the ball return and throws over the 20 board. But if the lanes are not giving that to him, instead of moving, he take another ball. By the end of the night, he has used every ball that he crought and makes this statement: The ball that I need is sitting at home. (I just love that one.) We are always telling him to  stand up and move right and thrown down and in or at least not that big hooking ball. His average has slowly gone down and there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. The shot is pretty simple, 40ft Christmas Tree. Not saying that it is super simple, but it is a decent pattern to score on. But he refuses to move, instead he picks up another ball, then another, then another. Gets really frustrating to watch and to know that nothing is going to help except to move his feet.

Sorry about the rant, but just wanted to say that moving your feet is always an option rather then picking up another ball.

I used to be notaurious for making a ball change. About a year ago I learned to stop doing that and start making hand adjustments, line adjustments, speed adjustments, hell, sometimes it takes all 3 at 1 time to find the right look.

I usually start with hand position changes. If I find that the ball still isn't recovering like I want, then I slow my ball speed down with a lower back swing. If that does not work, then I go back to my normal backswing and start moving right. Usually moving right does the final trick. A ball change is a major adjustment, a good bowler should be able to line up again once they lose their starting line with line adjustments and hand adjustments combined.

With todays market, theres so many balls available to us that this kind of bowler will become more common with each passing day.

if the ball i am using wont afford me any area ,meaning if i have to be dead on with it ,i will switch balls until i find the one for the shot i am playing if after i change balls and i still dont get the area i am looking for then i will work with the one that gives me the best reaction. If i am playing with a ball that was hitting the pocket and carrying and then, all things being even,i loose carry on a pocket hit i should only need to move a board or 2. If in that move i still dont carry i will switch balls . Its easier for me to go weaker on the same line than it is to make a 5 board move and shoot the same ball if i was already striking.

Ok, but what if the lanes are unexpectedly olier than normal and than one was expecting, which happens a little bit on ,my tuesday night league? should one make a move with ones feet outside 5 boards or more or should he make a ball change to a ball that may hook more if he has one ?

This is not always an immediate call to change balls.  I can make any number of adjustments that will get the ball I'm using to react better in such circumstances.

I'm not a big fan of hand release changes because I believe that is an elevated skill that should be used at last ditch effort.  Most bowlers in the 200 average range do not have the skill to change their hand position with enough consistency to make it usefull.

So I would move outside a bit on heavier oil conditions.  That's with my feet and target.

I would target closer to  me, rather then the arrows.  So my primary target was closer.

I would hold the ball lower in my stance so that my back swing wasn't as high, thus lowering my ball speed effortlessly.

Once I did that, and I was playing a more outside line, I have to realize that expecting a dull coverstock to cover that many boards effectively is a pipe dream.  So I then go to a polished solid reactive and tighten up my feet vs target, if needed.

I do both change balls and adjust.  If I feel that the ball is just over hooking because of the conditions, then change balls.  But if you adjust and the ball is leaving weak spares, like weak corner pins, the its time to change, cause the ball is burning up.

Given I have a line and a ball to play with successfully, my first step is to change the line a bit when I feel that the ball does not work properly anymore, e. g. 1-2 board deeper in search of oil or to a straighter line closer to the gutter.

If this does not improve ball reaction, I switch the ball and start to find a new line. Basically I have a rough idea which angles work well, so after 2-3 shots I am back into the pocket.

Additionally, when I run out of options due to very oily or dry shots or simply want to stick to the ball at hand, I experiment with speed changes.

Even though I can do so, I try to stay away from release changes, except for some axis tilt adjustments when the lane call for it. I'd rather change the ball.

As you can tell, it's an individual thing. I have team mates that change balls, others move. It's whatever YOU feel fits you and your game. IMO, there's no right/wrong answer, it's the bowler and how he/she feels more comfortable.

My wife, it's like getting candy out of a kid's hand, she will not change balls. Me, I'll move, if that doesn't work, than it's ball change time. I'm no pro, may wait to long for a ball change, but that's what is comfortable/works for me. For her, will not work, so you see it's the individual that has to have a plan, stick with it and go from there.

There are a couple of issues being discussed here.

One is ball selection for the condition. I take 3 strike balls with me for THS conditions in league. I generally have a pretty good idea of what will work from past experience but if the lanes dictate otherwise during practice I will change balls.

But once I have found a ball/line that works, I stick with it. I move my feet and target as needed to get to the break point.

Only if the lane(s) transition so much that I need a totally different look do I change balls. On a THS that seldom happens.
