Ability

Yesterday I had a Conference tournament and I placed 6th. However, everyone struggled. There was so much oil and I've never seen anything like it. It was also very wet/dry. I saw people with about 475 rpm throwing a Marvel-S and there ball was just skidding. My goal was to shoot 200 every game. I shot 206 208 and 166 in the first half. The second half, it was even worse. There was no friction on the lane til game 5. That was the game where it became very wet/dry. Game 6 I shot a 182 (credit to my Lights Out). But I felt hopeless on that shot. And I lost a lot of confidence after that. And I am very far from cocky. What could I have done (or next time I see a shot like this)?

Try to keep the ball in play as best you can and make your spares.

     Excellent advice, Further Review.

If there is too much oil, find a spot that the ball has very little work to do.  might look like a conventional plastic ball kind of shot when you find it, but it's there, somewhere.

Take a day like that as a learning experience, learn were your weaknesses are, and try to eliminate them as best you can.  If the whole field struggled, don't feel so bad; tough shot, tough day.

Thanks Elimeno Pee. I figured it was a plastic ball shot. It just sucks that we got set to the worst pair. The guy who won the tournament had the lanes we broke down in the first half.

To the previous posters, I did grind for spares. But what held me back the most were the two splits I left.

What I usually do in a case where the lanes are not hooking or wet dry:  1.  Take a ball that has some angularity to it and play straight up around 13.  If the lanes really are that tight, even if you pull into 14, you can still get away with not hitting the nose and leaving a big split.  If this is the route you take, you cannot miss to the outside.

Other option is to take something that is more of a control piece and go around it; meaning stand way inside and play 20ish at the arrows and bank the wall out at 3-4-5 board.  I say a control ball because if you go that route, you dont want the ball to be uncontrollable off the friction.  I have a 300C Solid with a 2 inch pin to PAP that works great for this.  If you chose this; then you cant miss inside or you leave washouts/2-8-10s.

Straighter is usually greater in most cases though.  The "safe" play would be to get inside and and play direct to the pocket.  Square your shoulders up and pretend the 12 board is the gutter and take the outside completely out of play.

Actually, this was what I was doing. i was using my Critical Theory and playing at 15.  In games 4 or 5, there was no chance of throwing the ball to the outside (I actually tried). Seeing that the only way possible I could have had a normal shot required a very strong ball with a strong layout, I am going to bring two low end balls (Scream and Lights Out). But anyways back to practice.

We had this happen not too long ago. The oil machine oiled the entire lane for 60 feet. I think the highest set was 620. All you could do for three games was roll straight to the pocket and make sure you rolled the ball so that you would have enough carry to avoid bad leaves.

I shot 581, and was proud of it. I had an edge because I shoot plastic at my spares.

You have to play straight, slow down and make good shots. If you let the thought that some may have an easier shot than on your pair, you start worrying about them rather than focusing on what you have control over.

At least he offered some, all you have is infantile pot shots. Your reputation on these boards is that of a grade-A jackwagon who ruins threads. How's that feel?

They didn't say. But the ball didn't pick up til like 50 ft. Seeing how my team has practice this week, I'm going to work on it.

Swing area is addictive, and to make matters worse, we seldom see a house shot that doesn't have more than enough swing area.  It gets built into our approach and arm swing, making it physically difficult to square up and play straighter, taking what the lane gives you.  It takes some practice, and maybe even some fundamental changes in your game, to learn to play a bit straighter even when the swing is available.

This is probably the best advice in this thread so far. With it, I'll add in one more thing.

OP, If your ball was skidding that much, it definitely isn't getting into a roll, and as you said, if it is, it was 50ft down the lane. The best way to take care of that would be to move your target closer to you. That way it will get into a roll a lot sooner.

Combine that with squaring up and playing straighter, and not only would you have a good B game to go to (prime example: Mike Fagan), but you would also have a game to go to in heavy conditions like this.

I don't mean to sound like I am shooting anything down, but I was playing to the right. Although I am a teo-handed bowler, I am more of a power tweener than I ama cranker. I wasn't swinging the ball by any measures. I am a fairly versatile bowler. I can play up 5, 8, 10, swing it, bring it at 20 mph 14 mph(rarely necessary), crank it, forward roll, side roll, spinner style, backwards, etc. But even standing at ten and playing with my target to the left of me, it wasn't enough. All of my better days are from "squaring up". When I was hitting the pocket, I could carry. 4 pin, 4 9, 7, all sorts of things. I'll post a video tomorrow.
