I have a question
« on: February 29, 2008, 12:06:04 AM »
When you are doing the hot water bath.  Does the ball ever come out looking like their is no more oil on it???  I did it for a couple hours last night.  And it was still looking like a greasy french fry every time I pulled the ball out for a water change.  I used soap on the fist couple cycles.

The oil is supposed to float to the surface. When that stops, it's done I would assume.

You are wiping the ball while it's in the water right? You should be using a clean rag each rinse.

I was wiping and reapeating several times in soapy water...actually about 2.5 hrs last night.  It still looked super greasy on the surface of the ball.  This is the 1st time I have done this ball.  Maybe I will do it again this weekend?

you are probably seeing the soap. U should only use the soap the first time then just clean hot water the rest of the time. The soap is ONLY to get it off the coverstock, it doesn't extract the oil from the ball so once the coverstock has been cleaned off with the soap the first time, theres no need for it after that.

The mechanics behind cleaning the ball with the hot water bath technique is this: Materials will expand when exposed to higher temperatures, and shrink when exposed to colder temperatures. The heat of the water will make the oil trapped in the ball expand out to the surface. Soap will bond with the oil, effectively removing it from the ball. Most of the oil, attached to the soap, should remain in the initial wash water. Rinsing in hot water is done to dilute and remove any residual soap/oil mix. The amount of oil trapped in the ball will determine how many cycles, but I always recommend using a decent amount of liquid dish soap, followed by two rinses with clean hot water. You should not have to wash the ball more than twice to restore the reaction of your ball. I hope this information is helpful.

Very helpful thanks.  Like I said.  The weird part is after several rinses.  keeping the water clean.  The ball still keeps producing oil out of the coverstock.  My big question is that...does it ever stop producing oil...Like alot???  It was still very greasy after doing this several several times.
