« on: August 10, 2009, 10:48:41 AM »
A buddy of mine last night found out hed been making a bit of a boo boo when he's been cleaning his ball afater leauge lately. He's been happily working away with the pads for a couple months until someone told him the side with the numbers doesnt go on the ball............

Think we now know why we couldnt read the numbers on them, hes been steered in the right direction now!!

They last longer that way. And the difference between 360 and 4000 is VERY SUBTLE...

Off topic question but how long to Abarlon pads last? I have a 1000 grit one at home and have used it in a sink with water many times and still works great. I'm wondering what is the purpose to sandpaper now which lasts 1-2 times if your lucky.

Brian that was one of the selling points to using abralon in the 1st place.
They last much longer than sandpaper.

Everyone keep watch as I think I may have a line on abralon for as cheap as $3 per pad. maybe cheaper if bought in volume.....  I have to wait on some information though, but if you are interested....... lemme know...... I'll start a list...and see where my contacts lead.

Many times = what?

After x times, depending on pressure, the original grit level has been changed to some finer level. X times is usually less than "many" times. I suspect you now have a 2000 Abralon abrasive or even finer.

Yes, Abralon lasts longer than sandpaper BUT sandpaper is SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive than Abralon. So in the long run, sandpaper is a lot cheaper and last slonger than Abralon.

Abralon's advantages are in its consistency and ease of application, NOT in its cost per use. In that aspect, wet/dry silicon carbide sandpaper is cheaper.

Charlest is correct.. The grit will get finer over use.
I find they only last 5 or 6 times before they achieve a different grit then being brand new.

The rule of thumb with abralon is that after every 10 time of use on a haus or resurface machine. Now this number is lower with a spinner due to the amount of speed a ball spinner has over a haus or resurface machine. Now for myself if I am using them by hand I go every 15 times. Now you dont just toss the pad away after the stated number of times. You just down grade the pad to another. So if you have a 360 and you use it 10 times on a haus the next time use it at 500 then another 10 times and it becomes 1000 then 2000, and last 4000. After that you can throw it away or you can keep them handy as I do as a real light grit level thing for cleaning off belt marks on polished equpiment or to use them with the spinner to get a real high grit on a ball.

Another thing i use the old worn ones for is thumbs. You can cut them up and use them dry on a bevel sander to really smooth out a thumb hole

Get him some SIAair velvet pads... then he'll really be confused.

For those of you in the dark... these are the pads that Valentino sells/sold and Brunswick is starting to use where the red side is the abrasive side.

At least this isn't unheard of. I've used polishes and compounds on scotch brite (abrasive) pads before to create a finish close to the Brunswick "rough buff" factory finish, which isn't always the easiest finish to duplicate.
