Leagues instead of Tournaments
« on: August 03, 2003, 10:48:09 PM »
Almost all my preparation in this game is geared towards whatever tournaments are looming on the horizon.  I love the competition of tournament play, whether I donate or not.

The thought came to mind recently, if tournaments were suddenly out of the picture for whatever reason, and I was limited to only bowling on leagues, would I be interested?  Would I still prepare and stay the best I can be?  Or would the motivation be the same?

To me its a hard question, although I tend to think leagues would only hold my attention for a short time.  Of course I guess the $$$ involved in the league might make a difference.

What are your thoughts?

I would bowl the leagues, especially scratch leagues with bowlers that are better than myself in order to keep me on top of my game and wanting to improve. I bowl tourneys now, but they are only a monthly basis. Leagues are weekly so you are getting constant preparation for a weekly league. True, paying the money for a league can get a bit expensive, but thats all the more reason to attain a higher spot in the standings to win some of that back.

How am I supposed to knock all 10 down with one ball?!?

Sawbones,

It's true we know who the big dogs are in the tournaments, but I still have this fantasy about raining on their parade someday.

I get pumped up a little more right before a tournament also.  I look at it as a chance to compete against a different group of bowlers.  Of course, the bigger stage the tournament is on the better.  I still get excited going to the ABC nationals dreaming of some day winning an eagle.  Realistically, it probably won't happen, but I'm still going to aim high.

Even though I consider a big tournament like the ABC nationals a big deal, I still enjoy and respect a competitive scratch league.  So far, I have not led any scratch league in average for a season or been on a team that won the league.  That leaves room for improvement.

NevadaBowl, hopefully you don't find yourself bored with leagues.  If your current leagues do not excite you, then try to move up in competition until they do.  I assume there are several great bowlers in Vegas to measure yourself against.  Until you can beat them regularly, make that a hot goal that pumps you up like tournament competition does.

Five member leagues are more of a social deal to me.  It's so boring because it seems like you only throw a ball every 10 or 15 minutes.

I really believe that unless there are some great scratch leagues in your area, it's better to not bowl league and practice to get better.  This year, I'll bowl in my town because of Sawbones and will travel 1 hour every Friday night to bowl a 4 member traveling league. Other then that, I expect to bowl tournaments on the weekends and maybe practice on a few things during the week.

There are several good scratch leagues here in town that pay pretty hefty $$$.  Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to quit league play anytime soon.  I'm a bowler and need to compete.  Isn't that why we do this?  It is something I'm good at, albeit not as good as some of the hotshots in the area, and something that is good for dream fodder.

Besides, if you ever saw my golf game, you'd see why I bowl.  My golf game is the reason I am a bowler.
