Hello all,

I'm a long time bowler that is getting back into the game. I have been using an Ebonite urethane Avenger for some time, and want to get something a little nicer.

I called a pro shop in my area and arranged to have someone watch me bowl tomorrow. I'm hoping that he will know what he is doing and recommend a good ball for me. However, I'd like to have a small understanding of what kind of ball I should be looking for before I show up tomorrow. I was hoping you could help me with this.

I've been reading these sites and have determined that I am a stroker, medium speed, with a low to medium rev. I stand 1 board to the right of the second dot from the right, and I roll my ball over the 3rd arrow from the right for my strikeball. (Sorry about the way I describe where I stand. I know it's not right but I haven't learned how to describe it correctly yet.)

I average somewhere in the 160-180 range.

My axis of rotation is most like the picture shown in this link

I will be bowling on what I consider to be oily lanes. I'm not 100 percent sure about that but they look pretty oily to me  I bowl at the Casselberry, FL AMF in case anyone is familiar with the lane condition there.

I am interested in purchasing a storm ball as they seem to be popular and the pro shop I am going to carries them. Which storm ball would you recommend for my bowling style? Other brand recommendations are welcome as well. Thank you for your time.

Smokingun,

Any ball will out-perform your urethane ball, just because today's stuff is so more automatic.  I guess its whatever you want to spend.  I know that some of the mid price ball will be just as good as the more expensive stuff, but it is up to you.  I wouldnt recommend a partical ball if you were a bender, but that might be your best bet.  They seem to help the bowlers who dont rev the ball much.  And also, because you do spin it, I wouldnt ask for anything that goes long, it will go long because of the spin, but will snap hard in the ends.  Partical will grab early, and keep going at the ends.  Hope this makes sense. I would do some research and see which ball will move in the mid lane and continues in the end, if you are looking for something in the oil. Your pro shop guy should know what you need. Good Luck!

I would recomend the
XFACTOR RELOADED it a great all around ball as long as you dont' drill it too strong or to weak. Its a ball that responds very nicely to hand position changes, with that I mean cup the ball and it will respond and hook harder if ther is more oil, but hold your hand a little flatter and it will get down the lane nicely.Another nice storm abll is the Hot Rod , and Hot wire if your looking to spend a little less cash. One thing to remamber about the Reloaded is if you have a inconsistant release it could be disaster !! Like I said it reacts to the hand positions. One last thing another ball to consider is the original Inferno..... thats my own personal favorite. it acn be used ona wide variance  or lane conditions ...... good luck   kevin
Its just a game? Yeah Right! 2nd place is the 1st loser

Your best bet would be to read the reviews posted by the people on this site. Take your time and read carefully. I spent about three and half hours one day reading different reviews, that's how I came up with the inferno being my best bet. Nobody can tell you what ball is best for you without actually seeing you bowl.

But as far as recommendations go, your style sounds similar to mine, so I recommend the inferno. I think it's about the best medium/medium heavy oil ball on the market. (and just because it upsets certain people to see this phrase)= The darn thing hits like a truck!!! lol

You went to the trouble of arranging for someone to watch you bowl, so I would say to go with his suggestion.

If he's partial to Storm, he'll probably recommend something in the Flash or Power line.  The new Super Charge might be a good ball for you, as might be the new Flash Point, or the Eraser Particle Pearl.

I think you're looking for an even-reacting ball that's stronger than what you have, not a skid/flip monster you have no idea how to control.

Well, I'm back with a new ball in hand.  I'm a little worried as the guy didn't even watch me bowl before recommending and drilling the ball for me. I explained the way I bowled and asked if he would like to watch me as we discussed on the phone, but he said it wouldn't be necesary.  I wanted to walk out at that point, but I trusted him and went with his recommendation.  He recommended a Brunswick Raging Inferno, as he is familiar with the lanes I will be bowling on and confirmed they are very oily.  He also recommended I go with a fingertip setup, which I had never tried before.

The only thing that kind of bothered me is a center hole he had to drill in the ball to make the weight even on one side.  He explaiend that the ball was heavier on one side than the other, so this extra hole needed to be drilled.  I asked if all balls had to have this done and he said no.  I asked if the ball was deformed/misshapen and he said no and that this was a normal thing.

He drilled the ball, and placed the fingertip inserts into the holes.  I rolled 3 games at the lane outside of the pro shop to test it out.  I must say, I had no idea that I had the ability to make a ball hook like this.  I always thought I was doing something wrong, but this ball makes it so easy.

The lanes were dry so this was the wrong ball to use.  However, I bowled a 216 which is about 30 or so pins over my average.  I'm going to try it out on a oily lane later tonight to see how I do there.

I wanted to get your reaction to the drilling job he did on the ball, and also what you think about the extra centering hole.  Here are some pics.

The whole thing came to a total of $185.26

I just purchased the Storm Flash Point and threw it fore the first time today was more ball then I  thought it would be, very impressive. You can't go wrong with this ball at the cost, has nice arch and carries very well.
Good luck with whatever you buy, and welcome back to the greastest game on earth.

SG, based on your description of your track (very low), I wouldn't have drilled the ball like that. The pin is very high, which will take the ball farther down the lane before hooking.

And there's a big label shift to the side. Because your track is low, so you say/showed us, less of a shift isnecessary. This is my opinion. =:^D

goin from the lil hook that he had to one of the more aggressive balls on the market i think its ok.. he doesn't have command of that kind of hook, the only concern would be carry to me.. sounds like its better than b4 though

After looking at the pdf for the drill holes on the Raging Inferno, I think this guy was right on the money as to where the holes are drilled.

http://brunswickftp.com/Product%20info/Inferno%20Raging.pdf

It looks to me like he gave me drilling pattern 1L.  1L is for a medium-low track, medium-low rpm, and heavy oil.  Sounds good to me  One could argue that 1E would be better, but I'm kind of adjusting my mark to bowl across lane and let it swing out a bit before hooking in.  The late hook should help me with this.

BTW, I tried this thing out on an oily lane tonight for 5 games and didn't do so hot...  I think I'm just tired.  Tired, yeah, that's the ticket!!!
