Had a guy shoot an all-spare game on our league tonight...
« on: April 21, 2009, 02:01:05 PM »
Shot it while bowling against us, 188. Older fellow who throws basically a full roller and had never shot one before.

I consider this to be almost a bigger accomplishment than shooting 300 nowadays. Not only do you have to make 10 spares, you can't strike, and with the balls today as strong as they are, that's tough to do.

He was really happy about it, too, which I'm glad to see. A lot of people would have been ticked about not striking and not appreciated the accomplishment.

I blew one of these five years ago by missing an easy spare in the 10th. That haunts me more than my 296.

Man, I've never done it but got so close like 5 years ago.  Had 9 in a row and heaved the last one out to the right to make sure I didn't strike and left the 1-2-4.  Threw the spare ball and chopped it  Ended up with like 160 something.

I would like to know the ratio to 300 to those. Its like a dutch 200 I shot one last year and know one could figure out why I was exited those score and accompaniments are hard to do.

I'd like to know the same. Unscientifically, I can tell you I see about three Dutch 200s a year on our 24-team mixed league. There are typically two people per team that average 185+ on this league and about 10 guys who are scratch bowlers (and by that I mean 210 since that's what our HDCP is based off). Usually one of the scratch guys and some other random joe get a Dutch.

This is just the third or fourth all-spare game I've ever seen, period, my entire life.

And by the way, as far as the other weird awards, I have a triplicate on my record -- FOR THREE 121s. I did it my second-ever year of league.

I missed its partner, the 1-3-6. I had nine spares in a row and only two of them were single-pin spares. I had a split and a washout pickup in there. I decided if I got to the 10th and had a shot, I was going to go for it -- we were getting beat by about 200 sticks at the time. So I get up in the 10th, and intentionally try to go Brooklyn and leave a 5-9, but I went too far and left the 1-3-6. I then went too high into the spare and got the 1-3 but left the 6.

This guy tonight also picked up a split (3-10) during his run.

Did you at least give him a bunch of crap about not being able to carry for squat?

That is a good thing but can be very frustrating.  You know you are bowling well but just can't get things to fall.  I'd rather have good solid clean games than anything else now days.

lol...not really, at least not in the second half of the game. The first five frames were all 9-spares and a couple of them were major screwjobs. Flush pocket 7-pin with messengers flying, solid 8, that kind of thing. But after he spared sixth and seventh, we pretty much left him alone like it was a 300 game. He almost carried the first ball in the 10th, too -- crossed over to high Brooklyn and left a 3-pin that rocked back and forth before settling.
