I know this is an old argument/discussion, but after bowling exclusively on synthetics for almost a year, I feel that synthetics will ruin this game. It has made it unbelievably easy to bowl. It used to be when you shot a 681 you had a pretty good night. Now most times I am not in consideration for any pots or brackets in a mixed league. I have seen all averages rise to numbers never before seen. And lets not even talk about the left side. The lefties in my house are getting fat because they never, I MEAN NEVER, have to move or adjust. Whatever good line they find is there all night. I am a tweener and I used to be able to play inside of the majority of the right handers. Now that is very difficult with synthetics. Now to play inside I have to resort to being a stroker, because I am no cranker. I know getting good scores is always fun, but when people with ZERO hand have closed the gap considerably, I don't consider this fun. Maybe a sport shot would be good for me. It would put my average down to a 195, but it would slaughter the people with ZERO hand. What do you think?????

       We have a very good lefty in our house. I actually grew up with him in my home town. Granted, he is a very good bowler. However, just this Sunday he shot 300, 228, 300. He has lifted his average to, are you ready, 240. On wood, he was anywhere from 219 to 226. One year later, on the same shot, on synthetics, he is averaging more than fourteen points higher, this late in a full year season. Again, a very good bowler, but 240 average, two 300's in the same night. His fourth 300 this year. If these numbers were honest, he would be on the pro tour. He is a full roller. These are not "honor" scores. They are "dis-honor" scores, because they are dishonest. I know this sounds like sour grapes, but it is not. I have only enjoyed a five pin boost in average and I am just responding to your comment that you can not believe that your average would go up if they changed to synthetic. Well, believe it. I have seen it happen. Enjoy the wood while you still have it. It seems to keep some truth and honesty in bowling, even if the shot is easy. I now struggle beating people that on wood I would destroy them. Now, just close your eyes, chuck the ball right, and fingers? What are those. "We don't need no stinkin fingers!" "ZERO" hand people roll the ball to the pocket almost everytime. It is making me lose my flavor for the game. I think a sport shot is in my future!

My home house is wood, and it is known as one of the easiest houses in town (live in detroit). The shot is medium-medium light, and almost anyone can score there. We have a kid thats 19 thats averaging 249, and we had a bunch of 240's before high school started. I went through a terrible stretch, and i'm still in the 218-220 range. Its all about the condition of the wood you're bowling on (frequency of resurface) when you're comparing synthetic and wood.

The lighter fluid and match comment was a JOKE. I am not giving anyone any crazy ideas. LOL signified that this was a joke. I wish I had the wood back to put some integrity back into the game. That is my opinion. The numbers that the bowler that I was talking about are insane!!!!

You should come here to Albany, NY to bowl. 240 average won't even make the cut(or cash)in a tournament here. That's one both wood or synthetics. If you add up 300 games for my Thurs. nite league (18 - 4 person teams) there will be about 1000 - 300 games(lifetime). On guy has 81, another 67 another 65. So if you think it stinks there come here and bowl.

Why don't we ruin golf that way? We can make the hole twenty five feet in diameter and it would still be harder than the current bowling conditions!!!

We have old wood here,but they still keep score with pen and paper too.

I agree with Charlest here.  I bowl on both surfaces and I am actually averaging higher on some 45 year old wood than I am on synthetic this year.  The conditions on wood......THS with 90 units in the middle 44 feet in length.  Conditions on synthetic......THS with 40 units in the middle 36 feet in length.  With the number of units on the wood surface, my shot holds up better and longer than my shot on the synthetic surface.  Ever since I got my hands on a Mutant (particle coverstock), I have raised my average from 211 to 225 in a matter of 8 weeks including an 832 last week.  It all boils down to matching up.  To say that synthetics are ruining bowling just because it is a better surface susceptible to higher scores is kind of vague.  The right condition on any surface can allow for high scoring by anyone.
