Thumbhole problems
« on: February 06, 2005, 06:55:42 AM »
Hey guys, i am having a problem.  I just got a new ball Wednesday, and I am having problems with the fit.  The ball continually hangs up on my thumb, and now I notice a callus forming right at the bottom of the thumb.  I usually have a small callus, but I noticed it has gotten bigger since I last bowled on Thursday.  In order to get out somewhat cleanly, I have to keep the ball a little further forward on my thumb than usual, and then I get inconsistent reactions at times.  Either the ball falls off my thumb on the downswing and I get too much rotation, or the ball hangs and I get no turn.

I have taken the thumbhole to be enlarged little by little 3 times, with no luck.  I am extremely frustrated so far, and have almost 0 knowledge in terms of drilling.  Can someone please help me with what might be causing the problems, and also is this normal with new equipment or might this indicate a possible driller issue?

I use the vise oval thumbslugs, if that helps any.  I will have to get the pitch measured.  One problem I run into, is my driller is located about 30 minutes from me.  I have a closer driller, but I don't know how reliable he is.  I will find out though

From what you said about the callous, and sometimes it will drop out and other times it will just stay in, sounds like you are gripping the ball due to too much reverse.  You probably need more forward pitch in the thumb.

If this is a bevel or pitch issue, is this a common problem with new balls, or does this indicate any sort of issue with the driller?  Also, should I try trimming the callous down or just leave it?  I don't want to tear my thumb up, or have the callous mess with any of my other ball fits.

Compare the angle it is inserted to one that you release well.  A fairly small error with the angle of the oval can cause problems.  --  JohnP

Well I got the help, it was a bevel issue.  Thanks very much Tenpinitis.  I did have my pitch measured by 2 different drillers other than the original, and both had the same measurements.  My thumbhole on my Wired (good release) is 3/8 reverse, and my Panic is 1/8 reverse.  (If I remember right)
