Adjustments you make
« on: April 16, 2010, 03:55:33 AM »
We have had a debate over the past few weeks on my Thursday 2nd shift league after a guy walked out of league saying he wasn't going to bowl that night because he shouldn't have to throw the ball 3 m.p.h. more than his average speed to hit the pocket.  When I asked the guy last night why exactly he walked out that was the response I was given.  I then went on to ask what balls did he try.  His response was an Invasion, a Reign of Fire, and something else that would be considered a med / heavy oil ball.  I then asked him if he moved left to try a line that wasn't 15 - 5 to try and find more oil, he said he tried two shots but it wasn't going to work.  He then went on to belittle me saying that not everyone has a glorified houseball in a polished tropical storm that can be thrown 19 m.p.h. from 15 to 5, and that he has been bowling for 30 years and he knows how to make adjustments.  He wouldn't offer up any other adjustments that he made, just saying that he wasn't going to up his speed by 3 mph.  That was were the discussion ended.  Here's my question, I wanted to find out from you guys, what adjustments do you make when obviously your equipment doesn't match up with the condition to combat the condition.  I know that i first jump left and try to find something, alter hand position, or loft the ball more.  What are your suggestions and comments to the whole thing?

Alot of it depends on what the lanes are relaying back to me...i start like everybody else chasing it in. Ive seen times where just staying in the same spot and breaking my wrist back a little was all that was needed.

I guess what has worked more often than not for me is targeting with my eyes further down the lane closer to my breakpoint, ive even used my breakpoint as my target several times to get the ball to hold. Ive also had to use a couple adjustments ive mentioned at the same time, thats the great thing about our game, what worked yesterday might not work today.

As for the guy in your league, it sounds to me like he might be burnt out, and just needs a break. It happens, myself included. It could be too that he isnt comfortable throwing the ball harder and he knows it so he complained?

Well this guy you're talking about is the THS bowler who expects to be handed high scores without working for it. BTW, if you walked out of leauge during warm-up or the game at all, your whole team get's DQed for the night (this is our wed. night by law).

Sounds like a fun shot actually. On 2nd shift leauges I generally move left 5 boards across the board to play just inside the track with a medium oil pearl. If that don't work I will move right 2/1 to try and use the wornout track area to try and regain some lost hook. It's not uncommon for me to play really deep on a 2nd shift oil pattern either.

So basically I change lines, then if needed balls, hand changes with everything, ball speed.

I laugh at people like this guy.

As always, the first thing I do is chase the oil in.  If there's really no oil to the inside, I'm going to a weaker ball.  If that doesn't work, then I'll bring my index finger in, and put my pinky finger out.  Last choices-go to urethane or even plastic.  My speed and rotation doesn't change.

If the right side starts getting drier I start moving left. It is still a nice walled up shot, only the wall is bigger and you have to move a little more.

Relax the arm swing some and let the ball do all the work. Many times when the lanes get drier bowlers move left some and throw the ball harder but they also start trying to put more revs on it as well. It is isn't needed most of the times, just keep a good relaxed swing and let the ball do the rest.

He is a guy who bowled at a regional a few weeks ago, non champion one btw, was 13 sticks from being in the money, and since has had the attitude of I am too good to bowl on anything less.  My response to that is to stop bowling league, only bowl regional or PBAX leagues.  It's funny because he averages right around 200 on a fresh and he's averaging a 204 on the burnt up lanes, but it's the burnt lanes that he complains about.

The serious part to this is that he is now trying to get support from others to make a complaint to the corporate offices about the conditions.  It's a major joke really b/c this house is probably the easiest scoring house in the Hampton Roads Virginia area, with multiple 800's thrown every year, and many more 300's, with the state record being thrown here this past fall.

Tell him to go buy himself a cheap glorified houseball (AKA Tropical Storm) and get with the program.

Seriously, tell him he should learn how to read the ball going down the lane.  There are many adjustments that can be made outside of changing ball speed to a range that's outside of one's comfort zone.

As a bowler that isn't blessed with high natural speed, but good hand, these are the adjustments I would make first when coming in too high

Ball hooking too early - try less hand or move inside for more oil
Ball hooking too much - less side rotation, straighter up the back release

Thanks to everyone who gave an opinion.  I actually did tell him to go buy one of those glorified houseballs, that ball has been used to win a lot of money over the 2+ years that I have had it.  I also told him I would bowl him for money using an actual houseball vs. his equipment, he wouldn't take me up on it.

Yeah, I think I've won more money using a Scout or Tornado on a glorified house shot. I highly recommend anything entry level for a house shot, anything more than that and you probably don't have any hand.
