When can a line-up be changed?
« on: April 16, 2010, 02:11:37 AM »
What happened.

I was the lead off the whole year and we made it to the roll offs.  I was the president of the league.  For whatever reason our team captain moved me to second and moved our female bowler with a 155 average to bowl first.

During the match by the fifth frame we were behind by quite a bit.  In fun they were smack talking. Thier second bowler in the third had a strike and walking off the lane she said "I''m not scared of you Barry".  Thats when I started my string. Thier third bowler had a strike, then went Brooklynn on the next frame, (I teased him some because we pot bowl together and every time someone gets a somewhat undeserving strike, especially a Brooklyn he would sound off).  Then the next frame he crushed the pocket again.  By this time my teammates started to come alive and even our first bowler started making her spares (155 average, shot 136, scratch league  ).  I already had five in a row and we were closing in fast.  I was using a Mutant and I knew the lanes were breaking down.  Sure enough, my next shot crushed the Brooklyn side in the 9th frame and we had completed the comeback. Their third bowler can unglued.  I just smiled. We all marked in the 10th frame to take the win and move on to the next round.

Now the problem:

Both the female bowler and the trash talking third bowler were yelling and cussing that we cheated because we changed our line up.  Was that illegal?  It was the league secretary that made the changes in the computer.  The first bowler and the anchor congratulated us and tried to calm their other bowlers.

What do you think?

I don't believe there are any USBC rules about changing your lineup order before starting bowling.

Yes you can.

104a/1 May a captain change the lineup from game to game?
Yes. Unless it is a match point league or there is a league rule to the contrary, a captain may
change the lineup from one game to the next. Rule 106b, Item 1, states that once a game
has started, no changes to the order can be made after the start of a game. The rule does not
place a restriction on making changes during a series. A captain may change the order of the
players, replace a substitute with a regular member or make any other lineup change from one
game to the next.

I don't believe it was ever stated that the lineup was changed during the night.  But even in our league there are those teams that line up according to the higher seeded team to give themselves a better chance.

Basically....there is no rule that says we can't change it.

I also thought in a individual point league the team on the left put in line up first. Maybe it is just a courtesy and not a rule.

You most certainly can change your lineup before bowling starts.  Even during practice.

It's news to me that you can change it from game to game, save for taking a bowling in or out of the game.  Someone bowls the first game but can't bowl the rest of the night, you're allowed to make a substitution.  Or a change from a blind score to a non-blind score because someone showed up late.

But setting the lineup at the beginning of the night is 100% ok.  The other team is only complaining because they lost.

It's a rule.  The team on the right is considered the "Home team" and once the team on the left agrees to a lineup, the team on the right may change theirs.

Heres the rule from the USBC Rule Book-
100k. Match Point
A match point league is one in which team position standings include individual match points. Match point
leagues must follow these rules, unless the league has adopted a different procedure:
1. The team scheduled on the odd lane enters its lineup first.
