Advice on which pearl to get?
« on: November 16, 2007, 09:45:45 AM »
I am in need of a strong pearl ball, I have one pearl which is a buzz, and it is still up in the air if I match up with it well. The house I bowl at for league use to be a heavier shot, until they started having a league before us so we get second shift, and they are playing more medium than before. my ball I have been using is my Hawgzilla and some nights it works for a little bit, then starts to leave more tens than I would like and if I go to far right it will hit like a wet noddle or roll out and hit the 3-6.

My buzz doesn't seem to want to finish possibly because of the weaker layout I gave it, and I feel there is gap in my arsena; that needs a styrong pearl that will get good length and not read the mids to much, with a hard turn in the back. I have been wanting this so that I can open up the lanes, with enough energy and turn to make it back without leaving the 10 pin as much.

The 2 balls I have narrowed it down to is the Roto Grip Illusion, and Black widow Pearl. I have heard nothing but good things so far about the Illusion, and many good things about the BWP, with a few that weren't so good. I am trying to find out which ball has more steam on the backend, but still gets nice length to it. I will say I am sorta leaning to the BWP but It is still in the air.

Any help you guys could throw in on these 2 balls would help, and which one might suit me the best. Thanks

THe Illusion looks amazing.

I'd go with that, seeing as its a Storm product and that makes it stand out much over the BWP.

you want a strong pearl? get an angular one. it can be drilled for just about anything but extremes. i love mine. clears even burnt heads easy, revs up, and woosh! goes sideways. no quit at all. it hits HARD too.

I have thrown the Horizon (pearl) and it had good length and a strong arcy backend motion.  This isn't my ball, and we were on a fresh filler pattern on a sunday afternoon.  It has a little bit more oil down lane than what our regular THS has, and I was impressed with the move it made in that oil.  I'd say on a drier shot it would definitely be more angular, and aside of the Illusion, it may also be a gap filler for what you are looking for.

i think you should try and stay away from high end equipment on this one.

A high end core no matter how shined the surface will always try to turn up early.

Try drilling a Clash from Ebonite.

I use one for first shift oil (THS) at my home house and it gets down the lane and it hooks a lot.

You need to drill a ball that is made to get down the lane.

NOTHING HIGH END!!!

(Illusion might work too.....)

What kind of pearl are you looking for? Skid-Flip pearl or a rolly pearl? My choice for a flippy pearl would be a spit-fire or if u want stronger pearl maybe a domination or shift.

Why get so complicated: try some basic strong reacting, good basic pearls, like the Rampage, Nighthawk Pearl, Ogre Pearl, Toxic, Radar, Horizon Pearl, Equation. All are great balls if you use simple, direct, common sense in drilling them.

Newest is rarely the best or the most appropriate; don't get suckered into the "HYPE".

I am looking for more of a skid flip pearl, I don't want a rolly pearl, i have enough rolly equipment. Horizon pearl is not bad but from what i have seen the Illusion looks great. Still think It might have to much read in the mids for a inside angle, and leave energy to take out corners.

BWP is still in it as with the Sure Strike for LM

Skid/flip is in the eyes/hands of the bowler. ANy pearl can be made into a skid/flip reaction either by using it on too little oil or using it on too dry and long a backend or by drilling it with too long and/or too high a pin position or an inappropriate MB position on a mass bios ball.

Again, I warn you to be careful.

Somewhere in this mess of replies and posts, did yo uspecify how much oil you want or need to handle. That will help.

Just looked at your profile. You know you don;t neeed a pearl to get a skid/flip reaction. Your profile states you love the BB; its "smaller" neighbor, the BRB, is a major skid/flip ball on medium or lighter oil with an avergae or normal drill.  It's NOT cheap. In any case, I prefer the Sure Strike to the BRB, personally.

I still strongly recommend "basic" resin pearls: Rampage, Illusion, RXS300, Green Gargoyle (MAJOR skid/flip; you better be darned serious about wanting a skid/flip ball, if you choose this one!), Uranium HRG, Wrath SF, Kinetic (not pearl; still major skid/flip reaction), MoRich Awesome FLip, Toxic.

Ok, time to stop replying and pick a freaking ball already. This is not a major life or death decision.

So, you want a skid/flip pearl that doesn't need a lot of oil to work, but will still handle SOME oil.  A medium to lower flaring ball with "POP" on the backends, right?

From everything I have seen, the Cherry Vibe fis that bill very well.

From the down and in strokers here playing down the first arrow, to the cranker here who plays fourth arrow with it, it seems to do exactly what it was meant to do.  Medium flare with a strong read off the dry and a carry ratio as good as balls costing twice as much.   Seems to match up well for lots of different styles here and works on everything except the extremes of oil patterns.

If you aren't as interested in the Immortal Pearl now but are still curious on Visionary, The Ogre SS Pearl has a weaker core (higher RG/lower diff.) that some of the equipment listed and wouldnt have a problem rolling early.

Another ball I would recommend from VBP is the Dual Toned G-3 Gryphon.  I have the Frankie May and while it was much too early OOB finish I sanded it to 1000 and polished with 3M rubbing Compound (comparable to Delayed Reaction polish), and even with that on the ball in a wood house it was still very angular so I could imagine what the G-3 would be like with the normal polish/factory finish on it (I believe they use or use something very close to Powerhouse Factory Finish Polish on their pearls/polished reactives for OOB finish).

I gave my FMG to my better half, and now I wish I had it back as I have shot some pretty nice scores with it in the last week.  I think I will try the G-3 soon, because the FMG was a little too much ball for me.
