« on: December 20, 2009, 04:51:07 PM »
Am looking for something similar to but a touch weaker than the Visionary Slate Blue -

Possible current available choices include the: Lane 1 ChainSaw, AMF Hype, Seismic Desperado, Storm natural - Visionary Ogre-Urethane ?? Others ??

Please accept in advance  - Thank you for your opinion and experience.

My vote goes to the Urethane Ogre - just the thing you are looking for.

I love my Natural! It takes well to surface tweaks. I will be getting a Desperado also. It sounds like a great ball a step up fom the Natural.

I agree with dizzyfugu. Of the balls you mention, I think they will all be equal to or stronger than the slate blue EXCEPT for the Ogre Urethane.

The Ogre Urethane was designed for dry conditions, and others have said that it is weaker than the slate blue. Even though the slate blue was a pearl and the Ogre is a solid, the Ogre is highly polished and very hard.

I wouldn't go with the Hype Reactive based on what I get from my Urethane.  There is a lot of engine under the hood of that car if  you know what I mean.  I think the Link (900 Global) is still a good choice.   You wont get a lot of roll, but it definately fits the weaker profile.

Desperado, is my new dry lane ball, still has a nice turn for the pocket but it wont hook much.

mainzer, you must have a really weak layout.  I saw many of the online videos and this ball is supposed to out hook many of the reactives.  Can we see some pics of your Desperado?

????

I have not seen that and mine is weaker than my polished Blue/Green Centaur. It is definitely a mild ball, letting you play mostly outside of the 2nd arrow, but with plenty of punch in the backend, if not hook.

FWIW Mine is drilled almost exactly the same as mainzer''s pictured below.

I bought it off of dave300, this is the pic of the ball he posted, I have only slightly changed the thumb to accomadate my hand. I have kept the Surface prep has it was when I bought it.

As I stated, for me it a weaker piece, I usually play up 2nd arrow with it. the only time I have bellied it out was on the Cheetah pattern I played something like 14 or 15 out to around 10 at the BP and it rolled right back in, but Cheetah as alot of hook in the middle like that.

Also you guys must take into account that my average speed on the first ball is a tounch over 19 mph, when  I "slow it down" I am still throwing high to mid 17s. I have the hand to counter the speed but with the Desperado I have to slow down otherwise it goes dead straight just like the other Urethane stuff I have used.

Hope you understand the rambling. Sorry.

Ok ok...my comment was based on what I have seen on video.  I don't know what kind of condition the ball was tested on so I should have said it seems to be strong.  Not to mention I don't know what kind of release manzier has or you.  It was just an opinion.  bAnd like mainzer said he is a pretty good ball speed.  It seems to me like what I was seeing in the videos was somewhat slower than that.

Back to the point of the thread, as a 900 Global/AMF guy, I would suggest a Link or even maybe a Smoke.  You will have more options with a Link, but the Smoke is one cool looking ball!!!

In comparrison, I have the Urethane Hype.  It hooks almost as much as many of the mid priced balls on the market today with my layout and revrate.  I would put my Hype up against just about anything you wanted in terms of versatility.

I know for my game my urethane ball would be a bad choice.  I would need something pearl with a medium core.  Or solid with a weaker cover and medium core.  One wood lanes with a short pattern I use a Villain stacked layout or a Heist Pearl drilled stronger.  15.5 speed at the pins, 350 rev rate
