Weber "Crotch Chop" Retired
« on: August 25, 2003, 10:58:42 AM »
Per an article at www.bowlwny.com that appeared today after a clinic at South Transit Lanes in Lockport, NY, Pete Weber has "retired" the crotch chop. His reasons are stated within the article.
Wonder what the next topic of controversy is that he can bring on?

if you read between the lines in the august issue of bowlers journal international, walter ray williams, jr., politely stated that it's a shame that some of the publicity the pba is getting is from pete weber and the now-retired crotch chop. a shame indeed when you consider the year walter ray had..........

Curly, the crotch chop is just a move Pete would do when getting a strike.  It was started in the WWF by a group of wrestlers who were in a group called     D-Generation X.  Their signiture taunt was to make an "X" across their groin area.

First of all, I wish to give PDW a standing ovation for listening to his conscience (albeit after he found out kids were getting punished for it).  I would have liked to have seen him realize it, when the questions of controversy bgegan fkying, not long after he started the gesture.  All in all, at least "he" made the choice voluntarily to stop it, without anyone coerching him.  He had the wisdom to make the right decision, given the circumstances with the youth bowlers.

I have always maintained that it was wrong/inappropriate, when he started that STUPID and IMMATURE gesture.  Talent wise, he is top notch, but he appeared to not show any common sense when he started the Chop, in that he seemed to give no thought, to how it would catch on by those youth (and some adults) who admire him.  As for the comment, "I wonder what other controversy that he can bring on"; everyone know that PDW (like Danny Wiseman) can be controversial due to their competitive natures, and flambouancy.  Both have a flare for the dramatics, and both try to psyche out their opponents with whatever means is allowed.  Sometimes, PDW has come across as borderline arrogant (although some will call it confidence), and that is JMHO, and in no way slams him or his talent as a PBA bowler.  Let's just say that if another gesture comes up that becomes controversial, and PDW is the originator, I will not be surprised.  On the other hand, he could show everyone that he realizes his influence, and the next fad he starts could be a positive one!!

I had hoped that people would have at least read the article at www.bowlwny.com before adding posts.
My first intention was that when the article was read, people would see the positives of Mr. Pete Weber. The working with youth, and his concern for them.
Secondly, if anyone does not believe Pete has a history of controversy, whether it be self derived, or from outside sources, then they have not truly followed his career.
My personal belief is that he is purely a gifted and talented bowler, who's absolute full potential will never be known, due to past indiscretions in his life. However, he still has much time ahead to still accomplish more, and I would like to see him do such.
Having never personally interacted with Mr. Pete Weber, I regret the chance to do so recently. I do know that he is highly regarded by many within the PBA, including Parker Bohn, Brad Angelo, etc.
To those that like and or dislike PDW...that is your option, and opinions. But the person must be admired for his desire to assist youth bowling.

I think PDW should adopt some sort of original gesture.  Nothing derogatory or insulting, just something that can be his trademark.

He is a very emotive person on the lanes, so it would fit his personality quite well.
