all balls the same..........different grit???????

Does any body keep 2 or 3 balls in there bag that are all drilled the same and are the same make, but just have a different surface grit like  200 for oil and 2000 for more distance??

200 grit really is too low. For the most part 500 abralon is as low as you want to go. I have two Magic Actions in my bag that are near identical layouts with one at 1000a and one at 4000a.

It isn't a terrible idea. I don't do it often but if I am on a condition where they play well then they are an awesome 1-2 punch. Just tweaks the break point.

If you  combine the new layout techniques with the new cores and coverstocks then you have a legit league arsenal with one ball model and different layouts/ cover preps.

I don't think it's possible to make a complete TOURNAMENT arsenal using this method but I don't think it is out of the question for a league bowler.

I say do it if you match up well with a ball.  Different layouts & surfaces (x-hole too if needed) can tweak breakpoint shapes.  I'm all for that, especially if you and a coverstock get along well.

My X-Factor, Ace, Triple X and Triple Extreme are all drilled the same and all react differently.

X-Factor is box. This one is usually first out of the bag.

X-Factor XXX is box with Storm react-a-shine. This one is stupid off the dry and is the ball I go to when I start to move in.

X-Factor Ace is box. This ball is the one I go to when I need to be inside.

X-Factor Extreme is 1000. Haven't had enough oil for this one.

Yeah, I do it all the time.

I have 5 of these Zone balls from Brunswick.  They have all have a hole in the side.

I took one down to 80 grit, one at 320, and one at 600 and polished with vaseline.

The other two I didn't touch, except I soaked them in rubbing alcohol for like 20 days in the winter.  One in 70% and the other in 91%.

The 91% hooks more than the 70%.

Oh, and they all turned like gray, then blue, then yellow, and then back to normal color.  It was kind of like a gobstopper.

From my experience this works if you are able to change your hand position and alter the look that way.  If a person normally expects the ball and drilling layout to do the work of altering the look, then it won't work well for that person.  The surface is the most influential factor combined with how you actually release the ball.  You can make it have multiple variances with changing axis rotation angle, axis tilt, speed etc.  When using those changes then you can have 3 of the same ball (or more) with different grits and also alter them by balance holes and maybe slight changes in pin distance or MB position.  It only works if you want to work on being able to consistently alter your release different ways to change how the ball reacts to the lane conditions.  Otherwise a person would just have a different ball for each condition and keep the same basic release, and let the ball core and layout alter the look.  Also you can have the multiple releases and different balls with multiple layouts which gives you exponential options, but that's not keeping it simple although if a person can handle those calculations of what to use and how to release it for that condition then more power to them.  I would try to be around 1000, 2000, 4000, abralon or any of those polished as grits, 500 for the extreme oil or burning a spot/breakpoint.  200 is not something you'd want to ever do unless your in the middle of major resurfacing from deep gouges, not actually throw it at that grit.

You could save the money you spend on the 80 grit sandpaper and just roll it down a gravel road.

A few years ago, Clint Daley did that several times over with Track Animals, then Track Rule GP2s, and, I think, Robo Rules.  Keep in mind that the Animal had an extremely high particle load, the GP2 had a dual-particle cover that was also pretty high-load.  Those three were legitimate heavy oil monsters when they were current-line balls.
