when you setup for your approach??
« on: January 31, 2007, 11:59:06 AM »
do you look like a pro?

I was screwing off last night during leagues (shot big 120 the 1st game so the night was shot) and decided to try some different stuff. I could only remember one guy setting up on the approach that looked different than most..... Jason Couch. So I decide to try my best Couch inpersonation and see if there was a difference in anything.... It took me about a half a game to get used to it but I am going to stick with it, for various reasons...

1. I seem to be able to get more speed and a few more revs on the ball.
2. My footwork seems to be more in time with my armswing.
3. Most definately LESS strain on my back.
4. I seem to get more control (as in hitting my target and more consistant speed) I bet after I got everything ironed out I did not miss my target (usually look at a joint where the boards go together) by a board on each side...

I also see why his ball is SO POWERFUL.... as this is one of the very first things I noticed.... ( could my speed finally have equalled my revrate??)

do you model your stance/approach/armswing, ETC after anyone?
It felt kinda weird at first but it makes sense if you think about how he sets up.... if you put equal weight on both feet there has to be a shift of weight to start your approach (meaning more movement) now my weight is on my non pushoff foot and my pushoff just get slid about 8-12" forward and off we go...

Sorry for the rambling but I was adding stuff and deleting stuff as it popped into my head...... basically typing to myself outloud....

Thoughts? Comments?

I agree with Strike on this. I bowl natural and adjust if it is within my limits.

But of course if you look at how I bowled 12 years ago and then now, there is a huge difference in my stance, approach and release. But I guess as we strive to get better, we adjust little things. But before we know it, we have changed everything from what we used to do...

If one changes something and practices it, that something that was unnatural becomes natural by virtue... Am I correct? Then you are both saying that no one should ever strive to become better and try different things?

Gimme 2 weeks to solidify this and it will be natural..

You can become great doing what's natural if you keep at it.

I know what you mean, and I agree that you should bowl with what you can actually do, but saying do what feels "right" or "natural" may not work very well (assuming you want to bowl at a high level and you aren't just bowling for fun).  After all, when was the last time you saw some guy who has never bowled before, walk into the alley, grab a ball and shoes and have the form of a pro?  Usually it looks absolutely terrible because quite frankly, bowling "correctly" isn't a natural human action and therefore must be learned.  I know I'm ranting, I just thought I'd point out the crucial difference between "natural" and "within your limitations".  It'd be wrong to try to get everyone to bowl like Couch because obviously not everyone can do what he does, but if it works better for someone it'd make a lot more sense to learn that than to stick with what is comfortable but produces poor results.

I try a lot to throw it like Wes because his swing is sooooooo effortless and he gets sooooooo much power on the ball. I don't think I'll ever be as good as Wes, but I'm trying to mimic much of what he does. But, I have 2 different releases where I either try to put more end over end roll on the ball or more axis tilt. I just try to use whatever is working at that moment.
