Why bowling is a great game
« on: November 08, 2004, 02:34:15 AM »
Noticed a new crop of negative posts about bowling today, and thought this topic might be due.  Remember, I decided not to make any more posts bashing bowling, so this is my first positive attempt! LOL

It is still you against the lanes, against your opponent.  IF the lane condition is easy, and it comes down to who "matches up" first, then you better be sure you have the knowledge and skill to get lined up first!  So you see, the challenge is still there, it's just different.  You are no longer seeing who can grind out the most spares, but seeing if you can figure out the pattern and maximize your carry better than the next guy. If not, then he is obviously the better player that day.

The pins still make a lot of noise if you hit solid.  Take pride every time you bury all 10 in the pit!  Even on so called "easy conditions" it is still awesome to hear that "crash" and see nothing but the darkness of the curtain...

Your team is still your team.  It is still you against them... Competition is still there.  Comaraderie is still there.  You just can't let negative thoughts of the game keep you from seeing it.

Is bowling today different?  Sure it is.  But Sawbones (hope you don't mind me calling you out here), I have to ask because I don't know... When you were 20 years old, how did those who had been bowling for 30+ years talk about the game?  Did they complain about the new equipment ruining it, or did they just shoe it up and take your money?  My point is, every game evolves.  Some like it, some don't, but the champions are still the ones who shoot the highest scores consistently...

i agree 9~

No matter what the condition, the cream always rises to the top.......

To listen to some of these guys, they would rather have heavy oil gutter to gutter, foul line to the pit and see who can throw the straightest line and who can pick up the 5 pin the most.....talk about boring!

The problem in todays bowling is not easy conditions or todays high performance equipment. The only 2 problems I see is the cost of bowling and sandbagging. Either of which sux and there seems to be no solution to it.

Great post 9. Glad someone else see's things the way I do. The majority of us are here because we love the game. We need to show that a little more.

Bowling on a house shot is like making every par 4 220 yards long where everyone has a chance to hit the green and have a chance at making an eagle.

Believe me, I'd still struggle with a 220 yard par 4! LOL  Likewise, there are a lot of bowlers out there who struggle to avg 200 on  even the THS (me being one of them).  I can see the frustration of more accomplished players like yourself, but unfortunately, I think you are in a minority.  The majority of bowlers whom the industry is catering to are the hacks who shoe up once or twice a week and want a chance to get lucky and shoot good scores.

So what's the answer?  I don't know.  Maybe join Michiganbowling in pushing for more competitive tournaments and leagues for the more accomplished bowler?  It is my opinion that we could have different levels of competition with varying lane patterns quite easily with todays equipment, but as bowlers, we will have to show the proprietors that there is enough demand for this to be profitable over a long term.  Then you will be more likely to get them in on the program.
