THROWING AT THE 7/10 SPLIT!
« on: December 11, 2003, 11:10:28 PM »
I was reading a posting here where bowlers were talking about the time they made the 7/10 split. I was shocked at how many who did make it .. claim they shot for the 10 and it bounced around and caught the 7.

I don't shoot at it TOO often but whenever I did .. my target was the 7 .. always thought that was the easier pin to hit. I AM RIGHTY. Is my logic correct or should I target the 10 when this situation comes up?

I have made the 7-10 both by shooting the 7 and the 10 and the same thing happens both ways, the ball hits the pin squarely into the corner between the side board and the cushon and bounses straight back and flips up onto the lane and rolls across and picks up the spare.

A guy I used to bowl in the ABC's with has made it 14 times.

Two reasons I shoot the 10.

1.  When I shoot at a 7 pin, I rarely see it bounce out of the pit.  The 10 will bounce out occasionally.

2.  I don't expect to make it, so I'm practicing the pin that gives me more problems.

I understand the NOT A SET WAY TO MAKE THE 7/10 SPLIT .. but although I make the 10 pin 90% of the time (when left for a spare) I'm always careful when shooting the 10 pin spare .. I have a lot more confidence shooting at the 7. Throwing at the 10 to make the 7/10 split NEVER EVEN ENTERS my mind .. that's why I'M SO SURPRISED at bowlers comments. Now I see it appears to be quite common ..

I have never made the 7-10, but I have made the 8-10 by shooting at the 10 and bouncing it across the deck (I am right handed). As to why I shoot the 10 pin, it is because of two things.

1) I am very accurate/consistent when shooting 10 pins.
2) Since I usually try to increase the speed of the ball when I throw for the 7-10, I tend to have a higher backswing. This means that my shoulders open during my approach/swing. That said, it is easier to feed the ball to the right where the 10 pin is, than it is to keep your shoulders closed and shoot the 7 pin cross-lane when my backswing is that high.

The only reason I throw at the 10 instead of the 7 is because I feel a ton more comfortable with 10 pins than 7 pins.  Yes, I'm right handed.

Just once I'd like to show up at a place with the lanes FLOODED 45 feet down and flat.  That way I can watch these crankers struggle to find the pocket and leave splits while I come straight off the corner and do nothing but make 4 pins and 10 pins all night.
