Thumb Problems
« on: June 01, 2010, 09:13:21 AM »
Ok so I'm average bowler but with a major thumb problem. Everytime I bowl the back of my thumb under the knuckle and starting in the center heading toward up in a left motion. I assume from rotating my hand  when releasing the ball. Now I have fiddled with it for a good 3 months now with thumb slugs both small and large, and all sorts of tape but nothing really helps, I now have the IT system installed in my ball to see if it would help but I still have the same results. Any one have any suggestions or ideas, as both I and my proshop guy are out of ideas. Thanks

Dude what made you think and interchangeable thumb system in your ball would magically make your thumb problems go away? And i really don't even understand what is happening to your thumb from your description. Wipe the sweat off, hada tape, slide powders...

Sounds like you're bending your thumb.  Usually caused by too much reverse pitch in the thumb hole.

its not sweat, but I'll look into Hada Tape, thanks.

To be more specific about my thumb its almost like a friction burn that occurs in the same place after 2 games of bowling. Don't know how to explain it better than that.
I thought that if I used the IT system it would at least take out the different frictions from three balls and make it into one constant feeling.

The IT system will make it the same between all your stuff but it will not relieve you from (a) a poor fit or (b) a sqeezing problem.

You say you have changes inserts and such, while doing so did you try different pitches both forward and reverse plus laterally.

Excessive reverse pitch or your thumb hole is to big are the likely causes of this friction which lead you to squeezing your thumb as SrKegler stated.

+1...one of these two issues are almost always the culprit of abrasions on the back of the thumb. I suggest taking an old ball and having it plugged and experiment with some more forward and a smaller hole while concentrating on a very relaxed grip. Touch your thumbnail to the back of the hole like you are flipping a quarter in order to achieve a more relaxed grip.

It's relatively uncommon, but I had an issue that sounds a bit like this. After a large number of games (9-10 in a day) I had the issue of a blister developing on my thumb. This blister wasn't forming on the knuckle (where you'd normally expect it if you're squeezing the ball - I wasn't squeezing it) but on one side of the thumb, between the knuckle and the nail (about midway between them vertically).

My driller and I decided to go with a little more reverse pitch (I was already about a 1/4 I think) so we went to 3/8 and I haven't had the problem since. Fair warning, I do have a long span and long thumb so this amount reverse is right for me (I know reverse pitch is not so fashionable nowadays).

Also, to the OP: You don't indicate whether your right or left-handed, which would have a major impact on any advice. Try taking a picture of the offending thumb damage and posting a link here, so that people can be more definitive in their advice.
