Am I a bagger???
« on: September 13, 2004, 09:45:45 AM »
I've lost interest in bowling at the moment so I'm not bowling but one night a week and I don't have any plans on bowling tournaments this year.

Last year I ended with 227 and was bowling alot and bowled tournaments every week or so.
This year, I'm bowling with urethane and don't really care about how I score.  It's a fun league and I'm bowling with some guys that haven't bowled before.  The way things are going, I'll be lucky to book 200.

If I decide to get serious again in a year or so and bowl handicap tournament, will I be bagging?

Careful Hose, now that Nic knows your coming he'll probably go down to 169 (and upgrade to 26.2 CPL's).

It's ok to bag, come on over to the bagger side.   Once you go bagger, you will never go back !!

if you have to ask a question like that you obviously have doubts that what you are doing is wrong and with that being the case, whether you are sandbagging or not is not the question, but instead are you doing what is right

I still think that he is NOT a bagger. If you want to split hairs, then EVERYBODY is really a bagger:

1. If you bowl on ANY oil pattern other than the easiest pattern in your region, you are a bagger - if you are a 180 avg bowler on pattern D (for example) what do you think you are going to bowl on a THS? DUH!!!

2. If you are ever sick, or just not feeling 100% and decide to bowl, and then happen to bowl under your normal average you are a bagger!

3. If you drink enough to affect your game (even once) you are a bagger.

See how ridiculous this can get???

Bagger: Intentionally setting/dropping an average for the ONLY>>>ONLY>>>ONLY purpose of getting an unfair advantage in a handicap league or tournament.

Sorry for my rant - I think bagging is like ADD - everybody uses it as a blanket excuse for their own failures.

FYI, I shot 612 last night with three splits.  We've always had tough carry problems in our house and now we have new wood so everyone is leaving a few more pins then in the past. Now that I'm throwing urethane, I'm leaving a ton of single pins.  Urethane isn't as forgiving and when I miss out, the ball will come up light or half pocket where the new balls would Thunderstrike.

I'm trying as hard as I can but I'll be lucky to average more then 205.

Rowdy, the thing that makes this situation bagging is the last statement.  If he books a 200 avg, and then busts out the high tech stuff next year to hit handicap tournaments and get back to his 230 average then it's bagging.

How about this situation, I bowl in a second shift league, the lanes are either toast or very squirely.  I average 180 or so in this league, but the 2 to 3 times a year I sub in the first shift league I average 210 to 215, does that mean I am a bagger?  I go to handicap tourneys and bowl great, I win alot of money, does that mean I am a bagger?  I bowl the best I can, but the lane conditions are terrible when I get to them.

Bagging is all about intent. Somebody can always do something that gives them an advantage but if they did not have an intention of misrepresenting their average, then they are not bagging.

That's why ABC doesn't change its rules - it is impossible to verify someone's intent. A local example is that there was a formal complaint to the local ABC rep about some individuals bagging. The local rep advised the league that they were bowling in that they couldn't do anything about it - All the individual has to do is provide a plausible explanation - it becomes an issue of heresy. They also went on to say that they did not participate in "witch hunts" that were probably based on a personal grudge, etc....

I say don't get all fired up about baggers - just bowl better and beat the crap out of them - that's the way to get them.

rowdy: You're correct. Sandbagging comes down to intent.

So, if Hose intentionally bowls a handicap league using Urethane only, knowing his average will be lower than it would be with reactive,

then

next year enters a handicap tournament (using his Urethane average), but instead utilizes his higher scoring reactive equipment,

then

sandbagging is in action. At that point, he's intentionally taking advantage of a artificial average he created in the past.

If on the other hand he bowls tournaments with urethane equipment, then the established average becomes real and no sandbagging occurs.

Hose knows this; he's just yanking your chain.

Steven, thank you.  I've been wanting to say all along that a close observer would note that Hose had his tongue firmly in his cheek on this one.  Trust me, Hose knows what a bagger looks like and would, I believe, shoot him on sight.

(on edit) I forgot to add the Hose is pulling a Sawbones on us (remember, the fruit doesn't fall that far from the tree).

LOL at Steven and Rags

Even if I was to book under 210 or so with urethane on juiced up conditions, I think my pride wouldn't allow me take any handicap.

The nice thing about using urethane on juice is that I can tell the second the ball hits the lanes if it's close or not.  With all of my other stuff, even with a miss, I know it will be close and it's just a matter of carry.

Hose, I believe you; you're a quality bowler and want to win based on pure merit. Unfortunately, as we've discussed in the past, too many bowlers would take that urethane average to the handicap tournament 'bank' in a heartbeat.

Good thread though. You had a lot of people going.

rags hit it on the head. he wants to be like is old man. how sweet!

He knows that most tournaments with any real cash always go back a few years, 5 in most cases.

so 1 year of fun won't make you a sandbagger.

Is this all just a desperate cry in the night by the flat Hose to have me volunteer to show up for the Miller Lite again ?
Come on man I'll bring urethane and you can carry my weak azz in doubles.
