Am I analyzing this trend correctly?
« on: May 21, 2009, 08:39:02 AM »
I keep track of my bowling scores etc. with Gone Bowlin'. I noticed that the Game1, Game2, Game2 graph shows a drastic drop in score from game 1 to game 2 and on to game 3. Typical was last Tuesday evening in summer league, 236, 212, 180.

Am I correct in assuming that the lanes are transitioning and I am too stupid to recognize what the ball is doing and adjusting (line, target, change ball etc.) to compensate?

Since I am an 'ol phart, perhaps I am getting tired as the set goes on but not THAT tired. I still do physical labor and bowl quite a bit so I cannot believe I get that tired so quickly.

I guess I had better pay more attention to what is going on and not throw the same ball down the same line for three games!!!

Agreed?

If that's a consistent trend, then yes, I would say you are missing the transition.  Try making proactive moves, just to see what happens.  Even if you are hitting it well at the end of the first game, try moving a couple boards in at the start of game 2, etc.

Also, if you think you are getting tired.  When you practice, try bowling 4 games.  That way your body gets used to that amount of work, so you should have plenty in the tank at the end of your typical 3-game league set.

Do you drink while you bowl?  If so that could be your problem too.

I don't drink alcohol if that is what you mean, and my practice sessions are always 4 or 5 games. I will try to remember to move a little left at the beginning of the second and third games. I do move, but apparently not soon enough.

Thanks for the tips.

And even if you move, you may not be moving enough.  I've had times when I've moved one or two boards, but should have moved five!  Sometimes bold moves are called for.

Keep in mind if you are practicing alone that 4-5 five games is only 4-5 frames of league if your league is composed of 5 man teams.

+1

My regular league nite is Thursday, typically I move just 1-2 boards at a time, every few frames once the second game starts.

However, when I sub on Fridays, I typically make moves of about 4-5 boards at a time

You may also benefit from managing the lane conditions better.  Some nights when I see everybody's playing the same part of the lane, I'll start off the first game with something that is a little weaker and more controllable than my strongest piece.  After the shot starts to break down outside, I'll move several (5-6 boards) left, and grab a stronger ball with with a weaker kind of drill to prevent overreaction but still give me good backend to kick out the corners.  This way I'll have a burned up friction spot right and some fresher oil left.  You have to get proactive with your moves, not just reactive.  Be bold and make big moves when necessary, and don't wait until you start pinging 10 pins every single frame or leaving splits every other frame before you make your move.

All of your observations, and those of others, seem to be correct!

I also note that you mentioned getting tired.

An obvious symptom of playing the track area too long, is the perception that one's bowling suddenly becomes tiresome, or more like work, than a nice easy free-flowing shot routine.

Yes, you will have to force yourself to become proactive with your moves in the future.
