Why throw a ball 18 20 25 mph?

One reason (though there are others): For spares on very dry or very splotchy conditions, I will sometimes increase my speed to about 20 to insure the ball goes straight. The trick is in a free arm swing. With a free swing, you can increase speed without sacrificing accuracy.

Because that's my natural ball speed. I've been trying for years to slow it down. But when I'm throwing the ball well, I'm right around 20. I was working with a guy who has an unbelievable amount of bowling knowledge, and a great eye, and I told him I wanted to slow down. His response was "Why?"

Because until they make a ball that is the equivalent of a piece of ice with finger holes in it, I will have to continue throwing plastic at those speeds to keep it in play at my very dry local house.

I can understand you might wanto speed up for spares or really dry conditions but I don't understand why you would wanto throw a ball that fast all the time.

i used to throw right around 18-20, back when i was a true cranker. crankers have to throw hard to keep the ball in play. i still have a ton of hand, but i've changed styles from cranker to tweener and slowed my ball down, i realized that i have a hell of a lot more control on my shots when i'm not firing it. i'm right around 15-16, 17 at the most now, so i'm one of those "you dont have to throw hard to level the deck" believers now, after learning the hard way.

actually, i learned that about a year ago when i first bought my pearl vicious, i just never applied it to my game until now.

That is pretty easy to answer, actually. First off, you guys are hilarious. Secondly, the more hand you have (or in my case 2), the harder you have to roll it to get the ball down the lane. In my bowling center, they only oil 32 feet, so you really have to juice up the ball speed to keep the ball on your own side of the head pin. Just because manufacturers release more and more aggressive balls, does not mean that bowling centers are going to lay down more and more oil to compensate. So, us as bowlers, have to roll the ball harder. GRANTED...we do not have to buy these balls. But, in order to keep up with the industry and in order to have something newer and fresher, 75% of the balls released right now have earlier roll characteristics and bigger backend reactions. Everything leads to faster ball speeds.
