Am I Reading something inti This ?
« on: May 03, 2005, 10:34:32 PM »
2. Requiring all balls drilled after January 1, 2006 to have the center of gravity (CG) mark to be within one inch of the center of grip.
In conjunction with the proposed change of the balance hole specification, this new specification would allow league and tournament officials to verify a ball is within the current specifications for static weights.
Bowling balls manufactured prior to January 1, 2006 will be grandfathered in and will be able to be used in certified competition up until January 1, 2008.

Am I understanding this to say, that balls drilled after 1/1/06 will no longer have to be weighed, due to the CG within one inch of the center of grip ?

If that's the case, what IF something went just a hair off in manufacturing and it was 1.2 oz off ( and you wouldn't know until after drilling) and now it's a hair out ? By the way I read this, if CG is within 1" then someone looks at the ball and gives it a stamp of approval. Am I reading this  right ?

Of course, the final CG distance from grip center has nothing to do with the proposed legality. That 1" rule is an extra bizarreness on top of the "no weight hole" idea. If there's no weight hole, you should be able to put the CG anywhere the drilling and the starting top weight will allow.

Their proposal has zero bowling-based thought behind it. It's as if some one who knew nothing about bowling was given 37 seconds of basics and then drew up the proposal, like a non-bowling lawyer.

To be honest, all this has got my small pea brain so confused.... I know all of this is still "in the mix" and nothing is written in stone. I am wondering if all this isn't just a way to see WHAT the bowling community wants/will accept or really feels like the game needs as far as changes in the future.

As I said, I'm just trying to sort out everything, line by line, figure what they really want and see where to go from there. I know a few folks that will just not do anything that requires the "stamp of approval", but still bowl and enjoy it. I can see, I think, a lot of closed doors  (pro shops/online stores/smaller companies) if bowlers say and hold to it, that they will not buy anything until after 2008.

Thanks for the reply.

The way I read this rule is that they may be ignoring the static weights of the ball. With the CG within one inch of the grip center, it is assumed to be legal.

If they are not weighing balls any more, who is going to know?
