Title: Am I the only one...
Post by: lilpossum1 on February 13, 2015, 12:14:24 AM
Who doesn't want to throw high performance equipment? I subbed on a league tonight on drier wood lanes, and I swear 3/4 people were throwing high performance equipment, and I realized that I may be the only person in my county without a Crux. I started out throwing my Misfit pearl, and never second guessed my choice the whole night. A lot of people were having a problem with their equipment hitting soft, but my ball slammed the pocket all night as long as I got my ball outside the 10 board at the breakpoint. If I tucked the ball inside, it skidded too far before hooking. Don't get me wrong, I own a mastermind, and it is a fantastic ball, but I almost never throw it. And it has never been the first ball out of my bag like a lot of people are with their high performance stuff.

Sounds like u bowl on the same stuff I do.

The strongest ball I use is an optimus at my wood house.  I got stiff like a !QTF, wrecker, uproar, etc. That I shuffle in and out based on what the house is putting out..very hooky.

I agree used a pin down Freakin Frantic  to start the night then went down to a Break down to help get the ball further down the lane shot 670 on old wood lanes. People around us using crux, mastermind and so on and wondering what happened in the second game LOL

I have recently started to go the other way and use high performance stuff over mid-range balls because, although the mid-range balls usually give me a good look and maybe a little more room, the carry was lacking.  Using the higher end stuff and wheeling the lane as the night wears on provides me better and more consistent carry.  Go figure.

If I have head oil and need angle to carry I do the same.

I guess I am lucky enough to have some oil here because my shot works with all high end. In practice I do try and throw each ball to see what is giving me the best look, and hit. It boils down to me using either the Hyper Cell, H/C Skid, Sinister or Defiant Soul. The Uproar is there if I need it, but usually don't.

Last year in our mens league I tried fighting to stay right as long as possible using milder equipment and really didn't have much success. Finally I decided end of last year and all of this season to go with a more aggressive ball and stay as deep as possible.

Results are much higher scores and average and rarely having to move. Many lower rev bowlers that play more direct get in trouble on most THS or lighter conditions because they are throwing super hook equipment and struggling to stay on their side of the head pin.

It comes down to the right ball for the condition, the bowler, and the line.

Try using that ball at the USBC's   in the team event...and get back to us... :D

IMO...what you are seeing is a lot of ONE BALL BOWLERS...They buy a new ball...and they will use it...And they seldom adjust the cover...

The new ball is a replacement for their OLD 10 year old ball...

In most cases what you are seeing are not Arsenal bowlers...They are ONE BALL
BOWLERS...

And on today's desert { dry } conditions...people think it's so cool to say...they use tamer older equipment...

I guess that makes them feel like their GOOD... ;)

Most houses are different, if not all. I can walk into a center and most everyone is throwing high end stuff made to tackle the conditions they face. Then drive 6 miles away or so and most of the bowlers are throwing medium to entry level equipment. So it varies in bowling centers and styles.

I have low tilt and (had) low rotaion....when others were using vivids, invasions, and other "heavy oil" balls, I was using a tropical heat solid.... but there were times I used medium stuff like hyroads on sport too..

I go back and forth, I normally have better visual ball reaction with the mid range equipment, but I've been able to use High End equipment and control the front to back shape better (lot less over under shape) when the lanes start to break down.

I find myself questioning my decision making every night regardless because i'm a hack that doesn't practice.

I see exactly what you described jay. In match club, we see all kinds of different conditions and in the Sac area, it can be dramatic from house to house. Strikes in Elk Grove is a flood, but AMF Land Park is usually bone dry. Fireside Lanes seems to be right down the middle.

Here in Stockton, both houses are on the dryer side, but nothing unplayable.

EXACTLY!!! lol  even the people are much different from both houses lol....I struggle on dry, but the people are much nicer at LP than at strikes lol...

My A game is going straighter and in my home house, you cannot go straight with high performance equipment.  However, there are some nights where playing straight is not an option so I ball up, move in, and swing the ball to get carry.

Balls are like tools in the toolbox - use them when they are the right tool for the job, not because you have them in the box.

I have a 15 board zone where I stand with my feet in this house depending on the night. On Wednesday, the lanes force me way left and I have to pitch the ball out to around the 5 board at the breakpoint. Thursdays, I can stay moderately inside and pitch the ball out to around the 10 board, and I will hit the pocket. On Sundays, good luck doing anything except pointing the ball at the pocket and praying.

No, you are not the only one.

Asyms spin up quickly. Most THS do not have the head oil to support HP releases with strong covers and heavy rolling asym cores. It isnt until oil is applied that you see major differences in your equipment.
But on you avg THS, any symmetrical mild covered ball with surface adjustments will do.

I agree with KidLost,

I have gone to mostly symmetric equipment and switched on our strong side to side wet dry THS to some pin downs also.

I am starting to really get some area and carry.
Particularly I like moving inside deeper to soften the explosion off the harsh dry!
