What would you guys do when this happens?
« on: February 24, 2008, 04:13:16 AM »
Hey All!  There is this guy in my league who goes through my bag when he needs things.  Like borrowing tape, rosin bags, soles, heels and he even took my Angular One out of my bag and used it without my permission when all his balls didn't work.  And to top it off when he borrows stuff he doesnt' return it.  Not only that he goes through my bag but he goes through other people bags too for stuff.  Thanks for the help......

The guy is a thief.

Call him out if/when you catch him doing it. Let everyone know he was caught.

If that doesn't stop it then I would think you could get the league to throw him out.

It's not borrowing if you don't ask.  I have a miniture pro shop in my bag, and I have never turned someone away if they need something, but they had better ask my permission.  If you haven't already done so, tell him you're happy to share (if you are happy to share) but that he absolutley needs to ask for what he needs and YOU will retrieve it from your bag.  If after that, when you see him going into your bag I'd make a BIG production about letting everyone know he's going through your stuff.

In addition to Dan's reply, I'd add, if he borrows something like tape, EVERY week, after the 3rd week, I'd suggest that you politely tell him to get his own tape and never put his hand on your equipment and bag again WITHOUT your WRITTEN permisison.

There are many people too lazy and too cheap to buy their own accessories which they know they need. I also do like Dan: carry almost everything I might need. People know that and always ask me. I never say "no". Some people joke about all the stuff I carry. If you do, then don't expect me to lend/give you one of those things you never expected to need.

I'd knock the guy square on his a*s first, then I'd go to the league have them get rid of him.

I'd invest in small luggage locks and keep my bag locked whenever he's around.  He'd be forced to ASK to use tape, a ball or whatever he is looking for.

Put a mouse trap in the pocket he raids the most.

Seriously, I'm with Charlest.  I keeps tons of stuff and will gladly help out anyone in need if they ask.  Take it for granted and forget about it.

for one, if it's a teamamte, all of my teammates know that my bag is open to them, anyone else had better ask or get a punch in the face!

There isn't a comfy solution for this. You're basically going to have to be the bad guy.

Tell him that the bag stuff costs money and you didn't plan to buy for two people. If he wants to chip in for a community supply, you might agree to do that but otherwise he needs to get his own stuff.

As for the balls, I'd be very direct about that. Inform him that no one, not even your own Mom or Dad, throws your stuff without your prior OK.

If this causes a problem, remove him from the team (if he's your teammate). If he's some random guy from another team, my first order of business after explaining your policy to him is to find your sergeant-at-arms and tell him you're going to be needing his official duties later that night.

Let me guess, he always has plenty of money for beer or card games, right? Many leagues have a guy like you describe.  He definitely needs permission or he's a leach. Most of us don't mind helping someone who needs some accessories from time to time, when they ask and appreciate it. Bowling balls don't have an unlimited life span and cost plenty of money, so I'd be hesitant to give someone free access to them.

I'd tell the stupid little Mo next time he's near your stuff that the Pro Shop's over there and not in your bag and if he can't afford it then he don't need it.  I do like the luggage lock idea too.

i like the mousetrap idea it's mean but funny, for most men its easy  (me being a marine might help) to humiliate them.  Just say it loud enough people hear you that you dont want him going through your things, and if that doesnt work then get stern with him. I had the same issue with a guy that is in a league with me, i just had enough and snapped on him one day, it hasn't happened since.  Don't resort to physical, but my advice would be to just humiliate him (nicely) lol
