What do you do with hooking heads?
« on: January 05, 2004, 12:41:17 AM »
When the heads are bone dry what do you do?  I threw some balls down a lane yesterday for fun and faced one of the more difficult conditions I have ever faced.  The place was so dry the ball picked up a roll before 10 feet.  No joke, it was rolling before the arrows.  So needless to say, I made several ball changes, all down the reactive chain down to my white dot.  That was looking like a super carbide.

I guess my question is, or my complaint or whatever is, what do you do?  I think it was damaging the ball it was so dry out there.  I don't know if they were burn marks, but the balls I was throwing were coming back with these little nasty scratches.

How do you overcome this kind of condition?  My girl who was throwing her bruiser  was of course going coast to coast into the gutter.  And then she pulled out the target and went coast to coast to the gutter.

I tried to play a deep line with a long low loft with the dot, but nothing really worked.  Even after they oiled em, it was a super short light pattern and it was rolling at 25-30 feet instead, which is much more playable, but still short.

Any thoughts?

Been there done that, centre owned by a theme park, honestly dont think has been oiled in the last 5 years, target zone, thrown around 25 from way left out way right would occasionally give a brookie.

I just gave up, no point practising on conditions that are as unplayable as that, and u are never likely to come up against them in a torny

If the condition is really challenging(rather bone dry or really really long heavy oil), Ill stand all the way right. Throw straight into the 1-3 pocket.

My theory is: "If all else fails, play straight."

Grab an alley ball (to protect your equipment) with a conventional grip and kill the ball (don't throw a hook).  RF makes a great point - you can't expect too many strikes, so try to get the ball around the pocket and leave spares you can convert.

Someone with a sick sense of humor did this to the lanes on our sweeper night a few years ago.  There were some people that were pretty hot around the collar.  I was able to cash doing the above.

is the formula I use...

How about talking to the lane owner and asking when he plans on oiling the lanes???

If they were that dry then there was never oil put on them that morning, maybe they have a new mechanic that didn't know what he was doing, or maybe the machine messed up. I would definitely tell the owner, for no other reason than the fact that it could cause damage to the lanes.

CCBowler--How deep did you get?  Your ball crossing what board at the arrows?  What would you say your trajectory was the closet you got to pocket?

last week, I went and "practiced" on a shot like that wear the ball turned before the arrows.  After a game of playing between 5th and 6th arrow, I found that plastic makes scoring possible.  Carry isn't specatular but with solid spare shooting and an occasional strike mid 180's is still a good goal.

ran into a shot like this new years day. i decided to go out and practice somewhere where i normally dont bowl since they had a good special. my first shot might have made it to the arrows before it took off on me. after a game of goin brooklyn mostly and playing around with hand positions and stuff i just pulled out my spare ball and threw that for the rest of the time i bowled.

Besides moving as far left as possible, don't be afraid to get in front of the ball return, try moving your eyes/target down the lane.  The farther down the lane you look, the more you will project the ball instead of grinding it into the lane.  This will help you get the ball down the lane easier.  Don't be afraid to throw that plastic ball.  25 years ago, plastic was king!

Hope this helps ya....

After reading Bowling Execution by Jowdy I tried his method and its not bad.He absolutly hates anyone using loft, because it can be so erratic.
I release long and very low. He calls it the drag shot. I come more up the back of the ball and not around the side. I also use the most shinny ball I have to help.
Its a good method if you can do and if you can't its worth trying in practice.
The lanes were absolutly bone dry and I mean dry on New Years Eve. I was hooking a Pulse Pearl gutter to gutter, but could still pick up 10 pins dead straight with a change in hand position and the same ball.
I cant believe how much Ive learnt this past year not only from my coach, but also from all the guys on this site, Thanks.

Weak ball kill my hand so not to over turn the ball and let the lanes do the turning. I use a Ebonite Tidal Wave teh is polished big time and then a Tornado Waring for worse condidtions and if the are downright awful i have a Urathane ball!

Usually move deeper inside, move my target further down the lane and fluff the ball thru the heads(take most the hand out of it).  Question?  Was it dry everywhere across the lane?

Smash,
There was no puddle anywhere on the lane.  It was a veritable drought.  No wet on any board.

I played a couple lines before settling down.  I tried to play down and in real fast with the white dot.  That was ok....But still too early rolling.  Then I tried to play the 4th arrow with a good amount of loft and speed.  The ball would make it back to the pocket but would hit real light.  So then I would just throw straight and hard at the spares.

I had almost forgotten.  I played on this same condition at this house a few months ago.  But instead of taking out plastic, I took out my freak out and lofted it what must have been 25 or 30 feet.  Not real high, just far.  As soon as it touched it jumped left.  I wound up shooting in the mid 500's with a 225 game,  which I will gladly take any day on that condition.  OF course the 225 was followed with something like a 145.

It's not real bowling on sand paper.  But I did like the challenge.  It was certainly no wall !
