AMF house trouble
« on: March 15, 2010, 03:57:21 AM »
At a local bowling alley a league member who wears sneakers to bowl recently broke their leg bowling and sued.  Corporate policy is now no one can wear sneakers even if they are only used for bowling.  Can they still have usbc leagues if they do not allow bowlers to use sneakers that are purely used for bowling. USBC rule states that they can be non marking shoes.

I am pretty sure they can adopt a corporate policy that is tougher than the USBC standards.  If it was changed after he broke his leg then they are going to have to settle.  If it was in place but not posted then they will settle.

The USBC does the tougher than standards thing for their own tournament, so I am sure it can be done by a company that owns the building that this occurred in.

Every shoe is not a "non marking" shoe...I bowl in AMF Marlow Heights in PG County, MD and I see Nike Boots and other kinds of shoes on the approach all the time and the management does nothing about it...that being said, I feel that the center manager should have every league bowler sign a waiver of liability sheet that says that you use this facility at their own risk and the center is not responsible in any way for any injuries that may happen.

Exactly how does soomeone break their leg bowling, and what does that have to do with shoes?

I agree.. and how would it be the alley''''s fault??
I am surprised any business can survive now a days.. seems you can sue and get money for just about anything.. seems places have to have a sign about everything so some idiot doesn''''t act like an idiot and do something to get themselves hurt..

I used to date a girl who was being courted by several different women's bowling programs -- she went to slide one night during, her sole stuck and she suffered tears to the MCL, PCL and ACL ligaments, patella tendon tear and suffered a stress fracture of the tibial plateau in her left knee. Ended her career and she hasn't thrown a ball since, even recreationally. You've got more forces in play during a bowling slide than you might think.

As to the case in question in this thread, I suspect what happened is the kid stuck, then took a tumble and broke the leg on the fall.

What I find ironic is one of the AMF ball company's bowlers is Michael Haugen, who appears to either wear sneakers or at least has a non-sliding sole on his left shoe. I realize AMF the ball company is different than AMF the bowling center company, but still...

If you are wearing a sneaker I can't imagine you want to or would try to slide at all..
