AMF/BowlMor
« on: August 08, 2014, 11:02:31 AM »
Last night was our start of season league meeting.  We have a small (10 team) mixed league.  Last year, our center was blessed with a new, state of the art, Kegel oil machine.  We were told the we could bowl on any shot we wanted for league.  So we voted and we picked 3 different Kegel Challenge shots.  Overall I felt it was a success and actually 3 teams that rarely make the 4 team roll-off, were in the roll-offs.  It turned out to be a great equalizer.   Many of the older bowlers enjoyed returning to the days of when shot making was important.  So with a mostly positive response from the league we voted on returning to that format.  Unfortunately we were told by the head mechanic because the "manager" didn't want to do it, that the BowlMor "policy" forbids him from putting down anything other than a house shot for league.

When pressed, he implied that the reasoning was that BowlMor wants people to have a fun experience, and doesn't want people to quit because of the difficulty of the shot.

I find so many things sad about this, but overall I was wondering if anyone has heard of this official/unofficial policy?  I have my doubts about this being the company line, but perhaps it is.

I also find it kind of ironic that they gave our center a state of the art oil machine that costs more than $30k, and can handle something like 40 pre-programmed shots and then say "you can only put down a house shot with it".  I think they could have saved themselves a little bit of money.

I don't believe that is a BowlMor policy to be honest.  There is a league at a center near me (a BowlMor center) that had a pattern designed by Kegel to use on their league for this upcoming season.  My guess is the "head" mechanic or the manager is just blowing smoke up your...well you know.

Flawed thinking........

Fun and scoring aren't necessarily equal.

Fun experience CAN equal "having to make shots".   Just saying.

I totally agree.  If everyone wants the tougher shot and they don't want to give it to them, then they are making people less likely to return … not more likely.  That is why I am a little suspicious of what we were told.

I think the mechanic is being lazy or the manager did tell him to keep it a certain pattern because it's cost effective being that way.????

Certainly the former but possibly some of the latter......

It's probably a whole lot closer to "I just don't WANT to, and I just don't want to tell you that bluntly".

Screw that whole "will of the league stuff"   ::)

Back when the house had the summit machine, one of the scratch big money league tried different patterns, but they couldn't get pattern right - h/o of problems. only the HOF in that league can score lol.... ;D

with that said, with the new kegel machine it shouldn't be that hard to apply different patterns right? so you'r right...the guy doesn't want to do it lol...

The other house, the lane guy will put down pattern(s) on request for the guys on two pairs. Just give two hour notice if I remember.

The league overseas have an older kegel machine and every quarter is a different pattern. OR...odds will be short and evens will be a long WTBA pattern...so, OP, your lane man is screw'n with you and your league.

We were told the same thing at our league meeting last night (AMF center). The manager was very excited to have "dozens and dozens of honor scores this season". Last season we bowled on the "middle of the road" Kegel pattern and had ZERO honor scores, which is what we expected when we decided to use that pattern. We were all happy to see 240's & 250's winning. No one wants to bowl 270 and not win a dime.

I believe the policy should be the USBC needs to certify Kegel Challenge conditions and there should be special leagues setup for Kegel Challenge like they do with sport leagues.
