Tucking the pinky?
« on: April 07, 2008, 08:23:50 PM »
Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but is there any real benefit in tucking the pinky? I currently don't but obviously I want to do anything which will help me improve. I've heard that you can supposedly generate a higher rev rate with more control - can anyone elaborate for me?

I have tried a couple of times, but when I do, I feel like I am quite literally dropping the ball when I try - as in the ball is almost hanging from my hand and I feel that I don't have any control over it and then when I release, my hand is on top of it - which obviously isn't right!

So, are there any real benefits to it? And what's the 'correct' way?

I'm far from an expert, but i find that when the pinky is closer to the midline i have much added length with a much more sharp turn off the breakpoint. Contrarily when the pinky is bent balls break is is not as flippy plus (this may sound foolish) strong forward roll. Just my 2 cents

Hels, there was a brief reference to this in a recent BTM, I'll dig it out and send you the info.

As far as I understand it, "tucking the pinky" is the next logical step from positioning of the "outriggers". If we take the extremes of position of the outriggers, there are four options, which I shall attempt to illustrate: here goes...

|oo|    |oo/   \oo|   \oo/

where the far left is least hook, generally and the far right is most hook (or potential as there is more "control" of the ball)
Tucking the pinky will increase the stiffness in your hand and therefore prevent any backwards motion of the wrist during the backswing, this increases leverage at release. If you'll pardon the extra comment, the reason your hand is on top of it is because your fingers don't always stay under the ball anyway, and this technique is going to exaggerate the impact.

A tucked pinky can add revs and back end - a nice extra punch to have in store if you need that additional ball reaction.

Ron Clifton has a nice article on finger positions in his online archive - but the site bowl4fun.com seems to be down at the moment?

Anyway, great article, and very useful since you can do a lot about your ball reaction through the finger position, in addition to the wrist.
