Bowling style
« on: April 07, 2008, 11:43:54 AM »
Is there someone you know or have watched bowl that their bowling style or ball release just drives you nuts?
This one guy, when I used to bowl tournaments, had this entry angle or spin on his ball that just carried everything.

In my younger days I felt one had to crush the pocket to be a good bowler.  Then here comes this guy that almost every shot was lite in the pocket but carried.  Out of 10 strikes, maybe two of them where solid in the pocket.  The others were lite hits that had what looked like a dominoes affect. He was a good bowler and won many tournaments, I just couldn't believe or accept that that was how he bowled or how he got his strikes.

It wasn't until I pounded the pocket at this one house(known for pocket 10 leaves) but just left so many single pins that I started modifying my shot. You guys know what I am talking about.  That one house or pair of lanes that you crush the pocket but you leave a ten or seven or eight or nine.  So then you hit a little higher and leave the 4 pin.  No matter what you try to do, you still leave a single pin. Drives you nuts. Seems like nothing will work...ahhh but it will.  The lite pocket hit.  Bowlers that "crush" the pocket think you are just lucky or getting lucky.  When in fact, that is your style because it works for you.
Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a solid crushing pocket hit. But that sound isn't going to win you the game now is it?  Nope, its he/she who knocks down the most pins by the 10th frame.

You kinda got derailed in the middle of your post...but anyways. There is a guy on the CBA up here in MN and he has a Robert Smith like backswing but does it without opening his shoulders. It looks like he is dislocating his shoulder on every shot. I bowled with him in an adult youth tournament and I could not watch him bowl. Also he threw a tornado sparkle while I was throwing a Smokin' Inferno and he had it come storming back from the 4 board in the last 5 feet. He is a great bowler. Last time I heard he held the record for most sanctioned 300's but I can't watch him bowl.
Always be sincere, even when you don't mean it.

There is a guy in my Thursday league that drives everyone nuts. He throws a platic ball with about 500 revs. The way he delivers it is what drives people nuts though. He is right handed, his elbow is bent through out the delivery, at release his elbow flies out and he pulls from under the ball, plants his foot, steps to the right and wonders why he only averages 140. Also he has pulled a groin muscle on more then one occasion while bowling. But he will not change his style, no matter what anyone tells him.
