An hour on the Open Team shot *Video*
« on: March 09, 2015, 07:24:16 PM »
This pattern is both brutal and extremely simple.  Just hit what you're aiming at, and be consistent with your speed, revs, and angle of rotation, that's all it takes.

We have Defy and higher friction lanes, so I'm sure it played drier than it will at the tournament, but given what I saw on the livestream, the limits felt appropriate.  Misses inside go high, literally zero miss room inside.  There is plenty of hook on the back, so getting soft and floating it a bit further outside with something with a bit of surface on it worked well.  My Rocket looked extremely good.  Tour Nano was too strong wherever I tried to play with it, but I imagine it will be just about right down there.  My Tour Solid was actually a bit too quick off the spot initially, but once I broke the lanes down some, it looked really good.  If you like being firm and rolling it, you'll love this pattern.  You can literally throw it directly into your breakpoint because it WILL hook.

However, it's speed sensitive and angle of rotation sensitive, though not incredibly rev sensitive.  Matter of fact, the nicer you are to it at the bottom, the smoother the transition was.  I have a lot of video, working on uploading it now.

Playing outside and being firm led to carrydown making your ball wiggle at the breakpoint.  Playing a small swing worked well, but it doesn't last long.  Chasing it inside, the best look is actually fairly deep and hooking most of the lane.  Obviously the problem with that is that once you get inside, the only direction you have to go is further left.  I beat up a pair by myself in an hour, and although Ice on lower friction lanes will hold up longer, I'm not expecting too much.

Basically, it's obvious what you need to do, and it's also obvious you CAN'T do that because you'll tear up the shot too quick.  Very fair shot, very fun shot, very challenging shot all the way around.  It's a shot that will make you cuss through smiles.  I'd love to have this for a league shot.

Not really.  Still have to cut the dead space out, nobody wants to watch a 3 minute video of 7 shots.  Like I said, have plenty more footage, but I don't have time during the week to do anything with it.

The shot is playable anywhere depending on how you throw the ball.  Realistically the shots in the video were the look that was most comfortable for me.  The shot had been bowled on a bit before, plus like I also said, we have Defy and high friction lanes.  Definitely didn't have trouble making it hook.  I guess I'll just forget the video, somebody will find something wrong with it however it turns out.

Wouldn't 7 consecutive shots be easier to put together?

Lol well I get that, but it will either be, "that doesn't look like the shot on the streams," or "are you sure that's fresh?" or showing too many strikes or misses, or not enough, etc.

I think it is cool that you even did it. One of my teammates set up a practice session for us this afternoon. I will see if I can glean some useful information from it to share.

My question is where will you move to when your already that deep?  With 10 guys on a pair starting in that much is death.  Well at least in my opinion.

That's my thoughts too. After game one, it's going to get ugly fast.

Excerpt from my OP:

Basically, it's obvious what you need to do, and it's also obvious you CAN'T do that because you'll tear up the shot too quick.

This is just the perfect shot in my mind.  You can literally play anywhere you want to play on the fresh, if you hit what you're aiming at, the pins will go down.  Problem is you also have to be smart and think very far ahead.  Versatility is the biggest key.  If you can start straight and just chase it inside as it transitions, great.  But also like I said, you've gotta be pretty firm with speed if you're right, and with that volume it carries down quickly and you'll start blowing through the spot.  However, you start deep, you really have nowhere to go.  Definitely better be using something polished.  But again, can't do that either, makes the transition too sharp . . it's a brilliant shot, it really is.  A group of very intelligent bowling minds came up with this.

There's a local tournament here this weekend using it, so I'll see what an 8 game sweeper on it looks like . . guarantee it will be ugly.

There was some traffic on the lanes before I started taping, not a whole ton, but that's probably 4 or 5 boards deeper than fresh.  I have more videos showing me playing straighter, hopefully coming this weekend.

If what's in the video is "the shot", then 95% of everyone who will go to El Paso has been eliminated(not that they weren't already). I don't buy that the pattern I see on those graphs is a 23-25 to 8 swing. At least not with success for three games.

Not that I doubt what you're saying, but in looking at this, plus looking at the first livestream of Nationals (over the past weekend, with Dan Stricker's team), some people were roughly playing that shape (not exactly that line). One of their lefties was playing a 14 - 13 out to about 8 or 7 and letting it roll up to the pocket.

Whether that will stay consistent, I don't know, but I agree that it could get ugly real quick without talking it out with your team and making the right adjustment, in both movement on the lane and equipment.

My experience with practicing in houses putting the Nationals shot has not been very favorable.

While they are much more challenging than a house shot they have not really played like I find at the tournament.

Whether it is because of house shot memory or a track area developed on lanes the house practice shots seem to play easier to me.

Pristine new lane surface combined with only sport shot patterns being put on the lane may make the true nationals shot tougher.

I agree that team lane play will be more important than ever. If you start with everyone playing their favorite line pretty soon the whole lane will blow up and virtually no one will have a shot.

You cant get a good example of any sport pattern unless you double strip in front of the pattern.  Most houses don't do that, thus there is still a lot of residual hold area from the house shot.  Last year we bowled on the Reno pattern for 2 weeks in my sport league prior to us going down.  They did double strip, and despite very old anvil lane, and different oil, I found the shot to play very close to Reno.  Only time I have ever seen that however.

Always remember, different, surface, oiler, weather, pins, kickbacks, bowlers. Practicing can give you a idea but you will need to fine tune it.
