Open frame.
Saying you "chopped it" almost makes it sound like you were close. Chopping it has always meant you hit it, the 6 pin (or any front pin), flush and just barely missed the 10 pin (or the pin in back). I've seen people barely skin the 6 pin and call it a chop. If you missed the 6 pin completely, hang your head in shame, walk back and do better next time. !

Well don't feel so bad I had a 456 on monday night....I think I was watching monday night football instead of bowling. 124,133 and a 199

Argggh, you can't take the rear pin "off" the front pin; the 7 is behind the 4, UNLESS you throw the frigging ball from behind the pin setter mechanism. You can only chop the 4 off the 7.

The "Argggh!" was just because I have heard it and read about it so many times, I lost my temper. sorry 'bout that.

For years, I learned bowling such that a "chop" was when you came so close to making a spare, for righties, like the 3/6 or the 6/10, and the ball hooked a hair too much (or you didn't play it precisely right) and the ball barely missed the 10 pin (of the 6/10 spare) or the 6 pin (of the 3/6 spare). For a long while now, maybe 10+ years, I hear everyone say, when they miss any one pin or any two pin spare, I "chopped" it. To me that is the wrong expression, jargon if you will.

I you hit the 10 pin and not the 6, then you didn't chop it. If you hit the 6 pin and not the 3 pin, you din't chop it. You missed the whole barn! (As in, "he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn."

Bowling has jargon; let's use it correctly.

Debating whether you "chop", "miss", or "whiff" the 6-10 is a great digression from the original topic.  I will attempt to steer this ship along the proper current.

Last year I posted a mind-blowing 424.  I swore that night that if I shot sub-4 I was going to quit bowling.  Glad I managed to squeak past the 400 mark because I shot 299-796 later that year.

After being out of bowling for 10 weeks with a severe muscle tear, I shot 504 on Monday my first week back.  I was so aggravated that I skipped my Thursday night league and took the week off.  The following Monday, I show up for more potential embarassment but ended up shooting 702 (w/ 33 pins handicap!).  I went from a 168 average to a 201 in one week.

Get over it and bowl better next week.

Well.....making the 6 wiggle and taking the 10 out I wouldn't consider "missing the barn !!!!".....missing, yes, but not missing the barn! Jeez give me 'that' much !

The way I bowled this past week .. I can't BASH anybody! I wish I could blame it on SOME THING .. but it was ALL my fault. Nooooo it wasn't BELOW 500 but it wasn't FAR OVER IT either!

Every time this happens to me .. I THANK GOD I'M NOT SUPPORTING MY FAMILY FROM THIS SPORT! It will come back (I ONLY HOPE IT'S SOON!).

Although I've whiffed the 6 and gotten the 10 too many times not to feel sympathy for Jeffnorevs and Leftovers, our anchor actually went between the 3 - 10, not once but 3 times last weekend without touching either.  Now that's pathetic.
