As far as I know, back in those days balls had no cores to them. From what I understand about this trick shot is that he would go out on the lanes ahead of time a put oil on certain parts of the lane to make it skid and then leave off oil where he wanted it to hook. How he got the ball to hook in opposite directions i will never understand, but I think that is how he did it.

It is unfortunately not a special effect. He is doing this on his "sunday driver" trick also on many videos. Simply unbelivable.

I do not KNOW how he did it.  I SUSPECT the ball had a pound or so of lead on the negative side.  When he first threw it the side roll overcame the neg side weight, but when the ball started rolling end over end, the weight pulled it in the opposite direction.  However he did it, it's amazing to see.  --  JohnP

I couldn't hear the sound on this one, so I don't know what's being said, but in the little bowling center I grew up in, there were a handful of house balls that would do that. We're talking about 40-50-year-old balls, if not older.

Given that all of them were rubber or early polyester, it was definitely due to the core. If you threw them slow enough, and with the right "English" on the ball, you could get an S-shape out of them (although not as much as in that video, but it was proof of concept, at least). I was always curious as to how they would weigh out on a scale if you put them on one.

They didn't have "NO" cores, but some had pancake cores. Not sure when they came into fashion. If you put a lot of negative side weight or bottom weight (and not 1 lb either, John ) you could easily make balls do "tricks" like this, with slower ball speeds and spinning, rather than rotating at the release point.

Haven't you guys ever seen older men and women with slower balls speeds whose balls would actually do this, to a smaller extent, of course???

People forget how good a bowler Andy Varipapa actually was. He got into so many movies showcasing bowling and having a ton of fun with the audience, making bowling popular, that people began to think of him obly as an clown, an entertainer.

Well, to counteract that, he entered one of the most famous of all Bowling Professional tournaments, the All-Star. This was THE most serious competition for any bowler in the World, literally. It was a one week, 100 game marathon. at the age of 55 and 56 (or thereabouts) he won it not just once, but TWICE.
Try bowling 100 games in a month, 25 games every week for 4 weeks. The current PBA guys this week will have bleeeding hands after 54 games. This was 2x as many games!!

I do agree that he just has the weight setup to do this. BUT I also have witnessed my friend hit his leg and it caused that same thing to happen. Lastly 25 games a week really isnt anything at all. I personally have had weeks where Ive bowled 100+ and it never bothered me. regardless this is a wonderful shot and Id love to be able to make it part of game(mess with people).
