Angular Solid?
« on: April 04, 2017, 10:22:45 AM »
Whats the most angular solid you currently or recently (past year) owned? Mine is currently the Rocket Ship.

Aside from the novelty of the question, another reason for posting is because I think many people are scared to try solids because they want to see backend movement.

Believe it or not, the Legion Solid for me. At 4000, 5" pin up, 60deg psa, I get 5-6" of very tight flare rings and a "pointy" reaction off of the spot for a solid.

Those Green Quantums can get pretty "angular" from what I've seen.

Mastermind Intellect. The factory finish it came with was shined a bit but that ball was very angular and strong off the spot. I think the Maverick, another solid, is fairly similar but stronger overall.

With drilling and surface adjustments: Sure Lock, Phaze II, Legion Solid, Black Ops, Maverick, Mako. That was off the top of my head. Sure there are plenty of other options. The Black Ops is probably at the top of the list for an angular solid.

The track mako fits the bill.  Ball can handle oil and turns the corner fairly strong.  Bring the surface up a little from the box finish and its money on medium patterns. One if my favorite pieces by far.

This is kind of an interesting topic.

I think many people don't realize that almost any solid can have an added degree of angularity if it is used on the wrong condition or if it is drilled wrong or is used with the wrong surface for the bowler's style and/or for the condition for which it was designed.

On the other hand, many new oilers, from the time of the Storm Virtual Gravity, have been and are being designed to have a strong backend.  Heck, let me backtrack on that: from the time of the original Danger Zone. Balls seem to have greater carry power when they have stronger backends, in general. There's also the condition being, when the bowler can control that backend with either speed or release.

On top of all this, MO has been encouraging bowlers for many years now to drill strong ball with a pin-up (small VAL angle) which results in a higher RG AND Intermediate differential. Some of these new oilers, together with Mo's "enhanced drillings' can actually appear to flip on true heavy oil.

Given all these ideas/factors/considerations, it's actually surprising that there aren't MANY, MANY more posters on this thread.
