Low, Medium and High Track
« on: January 16, 2008, 05:09:05 AM »
I personally have a low track, I've been wondering lately is there an advantage in having a low medium or high track?  What does it all mean?

Well with a low track the drillings are less specific. The higher the track is the more precise the drilling has to be. But really there is not any advantages to having one or the other, other then maybe a high track player can come up the back of the ball easier when the lane condition makes them.

Its "better" to have a high track. The ball gets into a roll sooner, making the reaction smoother.

What if I say it is "better" to have a low track? The ball clears the front part of the lane better, making backend reaction stronger.

Low trackers generally get the ball further down the lane, they can have advantages when the lanes have short oil or are generally dry.

The downside is that they (generally and relatively) do not develop a powerful end roll and impact in the pins. The chances of deflection are higher.

@Northface, I know what you mean - some players I know are low trackers, and their ball reaction looks dramatic in the back end. Ball goes long and then suddenly turns in a sharp arc. But still, they tend to lack a powerful forward roll and suffer from steep entry angles.

Having the ball finish well can be troublesome for a low tracker, esp. on long oil, because the ball rather spins on a small track than actually rolls. You need much/more help from the core and coverstock.

This does not make a low tracker inferior or a high tracker better. A good ball driller should be able to compensate in the setup, and as a low tracker you might need/use stromger balls than a higher tracker on the same condition would do.

I know, I was just just engaging in friendly semantics. Seriously though, neither is wrong or right, or good or bad. They just "are".

How would a full roller compare to the standard high/low track players?

Yes! My ball driller did exactly just that to me, so even though I'm mid-low track, my ball still finishes properly.

I still find long heavy oil hard to play, I just got to concentrate on locking my wrist to raise the track.

i track fairly high but wish i didnt many times..it would be easier to get the ball down the lanes in many instances..seems like the conditions are typically on the drier side rather than the oily side..

I have a very high and inverted track. I never have problems with fresh or heavier oiled lanes. My track gets the ball into a really heavy roll. I only have problems with solid 9's on the fresh back end shots.

Dry is another animal. When the midlane starts to dry up I have to go to weaker coverstocks with the pins way up to get the ball down lane without jerking through the nose every other frame.

Hope this gives some insight.

Ok, a follow up question and thanks everyone for your responses.  If I wanted to got to a higher track.  How is this accomplished??  I always assumed I had a low track because my wrist isn't locked firm

Not totally true, you can have a firm wrist and a low track based off what your hand does at the release point (coming around the side). Now, if your wrist were to "break" back or uncoil you could have a low track with a weak ball roll. Two different things. How to get a higher track? I do not know as I do not track high myself.
